HP Device Manager doesnt show my printer

Asked by Alvaro Leal (Effenberg0x0)

I have a HP PSC1350 connected through USB to a Windows XP Box. This PC is connected to a router. All other machines are laptops running Ubuntu Hardy that use Wi-Fi to connect to the same router. All laptops are able to see the Windows disk shares and printer.

I have started HP Device Manager and used the CUPS Web Interface to add the printer as smb://192.168.1.100/HPPSC1350. It worked for all machines. However, everytime I start HP Device Manager it still tells me there is no printer detected. When I try to make it search 192.168.1.100 it wont find anything. I used Firestarter to disable Firewall and also disabled all Firewall and AV software on the XP box but it didn't help. The router log shows no blocked traffic, I have put noth machines in dmz and forwarded the used port ranged but still it won't work.

Any tips?

This is because for the Device Manager to correctly function with the printer the printer needs to be using the hp:// backend. However HPLIP does not support connecting to shared windows printers. For this you'll want to do a search such as:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=com.ubuntu%3Aen-US%3Aunofficial&hs=W7J&q=ubuntu+print+to+windows+shared+printer&btnG=Search

Sorry I couldn't help more.
