Having installed hplip-2.8.2 on Suse-10.2 no ppd-file for HP Officejet Pro L7580 is available

Asked by Bahnsen

 Hi,

I've just installed hplip-2.8.2 out of a tarball from sourceforge.net on a Suse 10.2 I586 PC in order to run a new HP Officejet Pro L7580. This printer should be supported since version 1.7.2. But I cannot find a corresponding ppd-file in /usr/share/cups/model/HP/ . I would appreciate any support which ppd-file to choose.
Thanks in advance
Robert.

Aaron,

please find below the output of the required command.
Robert
PS: The printer is currently not switched on (because we first want to install hplib before be open the box).

zwerg:~ # hp-check -t

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if
the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP
supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time
dependencies).

Please run:

ls /usr/share/cups/model/HP | grep L7580

and

ls /usr/share/cups/drv/hp/ | grep L7580

and post the output.

The idea is to see if the ppd file was created..

Aaron,

please find the (zero) output below.
Robert

zwerg:~ # ls /usr/share/cups/model/HP | grep L7580
zwerg:~ # ls /usr/share/cups/drv/hp/ | grep L7580

PS: In these directories rather no output of the installation was to be found. The main content of my current installation of hplip (appr. 40 ppd-files) is found in:
/usr/share/cups/model/HP/

If possible please post the output of the install log file, it was created when you installed and should be in the hplip-2.8.2 source directory also created when you ran the installer. The log file is a time/date stamped name with .log as the extention.

The problem is the Suse 10.2 should be a ppd install. However for some reason hplip installed on your system as drv which will then not create the ppd files correctly.

foomatic-drv-install=yes
foomatic-ppd-install=no

Should be the other way around..

In the end we'll need to uninstall hplip;

In the hplip-2.8.2 source directory run:

su -c "make uninstall"
su -c "rm -rf /usr/share/hplip/"
su -c "make clean"

Then lets re-install manually;

Run:

./configure --enable-network-build --disable-pp-build --enable-fax-build --enable-gui-build --enable-scan-build --enable-doc-build --disable-foomatic-ppd-install --enable-foomatic-drv-install --with-drvdir=/usr/share/cups/drv/hp/ --with-hpppddir=/usr/share/cups/model/HP --disable-hpijs-only-build --prefix=/usr

make

su -c "make install"

However I'd really like to see your first install log because it -should- be installing as ppd. You can email it to me at ke7ezt(at)gmail(dot)com

Thanks!

Aaron,

after uninstalling, I reinstalled hplip-2.8.2 with the following settings:
zwerg:/opt/hplip-2.8.2# ./configure --disable-network-build --disable-pp-build
--enable-fax-build --enable-gui-build --enable-scan-build --enable-doc-build
--enable-foomatic-ppd-install --disable-foomatic-drv-install
--with-hpppddir=/usr/share/cups/model/HP --disable-hpijs-only-build --prefix=/usr

I deliberately switched off the first -network- switch because the printer is not used inside a network.Unfortunately the required ppd-file for the HP Officejet PRo L7580 is still missing; here is the output in the ppd-directory:
zwerg:/opt/hplip-2.8.2 # ls /usr/share/cups/model/HP/hp-officejet_pro_l7*
/usr/share/cups/model/HP/hp-officejet_pro_l7300-hpijs.ppd.gz /usr/share/cups/model/HP/hp-officejet_pro_l7600-hpijs.ppd.gz
/usr/share/cups/model/HP/hp-officejet_pro_l7500-hpijs.ppd.gz /usr/share/cups/model/HP/hp-officejet_pro_l7700-hpijs.ppd.gz

Do you have any further suggestions?

Robert,

It looks like the ppd file is there now?

/usr/share/cups/model/HP/hp-officejet_pro_l7500-hpijs.ppd.gz

Would be the correct one.

All the best,

A
