HP Officejet Pro 8500 a910 won't print using hplip driver (works using CUPS driver)

Asked by Jon Scally

Setup of my HP Officejet Prio 8500 a910n on OpenSUSE 13.2 using the hplip driver went without error - however when attempting to print a test page it shows the job as completed, but nothing has printed. I tested printing a KWord document and it also said it completed successfully, but nothing ever printed.

I then added the printer again using the CUPS driver and printing both the test page and KWord document are successful and print.

At this point chose the diagnose HPLIP driver option from the HP Device Manager gui and found the following issues:
-----------------------
| HPLIP CONFIGURATION |
-----------------------

HPLIP-Version: HPLIP 3.14.6
HPLIP-Home: /usr/share/hplip
warning: HPLIP-Installation: Auto installation is not supported for suse distro 13.2 version

Missing Required Dependencies
-----------------------------
error: 'sane-backends-devel' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'net-snmp-devel' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'hpaio' package is missing/incompatible
Missing Optional Dependencies
-----------------------------
error: 'avahi-utils' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'xsane' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'python-imaging' package is missing/incompatible
error: 'python-notify' package is missing/incompatible

Is there a timeframe when the hplip driver will be supported for the suse distro (13.2 or the upcoming Leap 42.1)?

Interestingly I am able to send a fax using the HPLIP driver. At this point I am using the CUPS driver for printing and the HPLIP driver for sending faxes.

Hi Jon,

Please can you try download the latest hplip-3.15.7.run auto-installer file from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html
and install the package using command 'sh hplip-3.15.7.run' .

After install, run command 'hp-setup' in terminal to configure the printer.

Please let us know if the issue still exist.

thanks,
Goutam
