jetdirect printer not recognized

Asked by uncle frank

I am a new Ubuntu user running version 7.10. I have a working Hp photosmart 8450 usb printer which works fine. I just purchased an Hp 4100n jetdirect printer and I installed it according to the information in my official Ubuntu book. When I go to print the printer queue shows the print job is pending. I have link lights on both ends of my 100_t cable. It appears there is an addressing problem since everything hooked to the network is working except this printer. I also am unable to run hp-check.Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this problem? Thanks, uncle frank

Uncle Frank,

Is it possible to install the latest hplip from source from our website http://hplip.sf.net ? The process is well documented and pretty straight forward. It will be easier to troubleshoot with our source because the ubuntu hplip package does not include all of the hplip tools.

Thanks!

Aaron

Aaron, I attempted to download the hplip.2.8.2.run file and the tar file but I get an error in console
"rejected none of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed"
The server showed the file was downloading but appeared to hang up at that point. Frank

Frank,

Have you looked over this document?

http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/install/index.html

If you continue to have a problem please post what is being outputted in the console. You can highlight, copy and then past in a reply.

Thanks!

Aaron

Aaron, I finally got the hplip 2.8.2.run to download by putting the file in the desktop instead of the usr/share/hplip directory. There is apparently a rights or ownership issue with that subdirectory. The file expanded and installed but the printer still is not recognized when I do a network search. I am going to download the HP4100n manuals and see if they give an address that I can ping.

Yes you want to download the file to your desktop.

If the setup isn't locating the printer try running:

sudo hp-setup -ai ip.address.of.printer

for example:

sudo hp-setup -ai 11.111.11.111

What happens then? If you continue to get an error run:

hp-probe ip.address.of.printer

and post the output.

Thanks!

Aaron

Aaron, when I run hp-setup I get the message "0 devices found on the network"
When I run hp-probe I get the message "no devices found on the 'net' bus"
I am going to try to get a windows machine running and see if it will communicate with the printer. This will tell me for certain whether I have an Ubuntu problem or a printer problem. Thanks, Frank

Frank,

What happens if you run:

ping ip.address.of.printer

example: ping 192.168.0.3

Aaron I ran the ping command and the printer seems to answer. The response was
ping 192.168.0.3 (192.168.0.3) 56(84) bytes of data
I am still trying to get a windows machine running to provide an additional test platform. Thanks, uncle frank

If the ping worked it should be okay.

Please run

hp-makeuri <ip address of printer>

and post the output.

Aaron I have tried hp-makeuri with the addresses 192.168.0.0 as well as 192.168.0.3 with the same error message
is it possible there is an address already in my setup that needs changed? uncle frank

Additional information: I downloaded the entire hp printer manual and the ip address will print out. the actual address is 192.168.1.208 When i ping this address then hit <ctrl> c i get the message that the printer is not responding. It is possible that I have a bad jetdirect card. Frank

Frank,

Although I can't say for sure if there is a jetdirect card problem--usually if ping doesn't work it would seem to indicate a network problem and/or network configuration problem. Ping is a basic network test to verify if the networked device is available on the network. Is it possible to plug the printer into the computer directly to verify that the device is working otherwise? What's the make/model of your router? Sometimes you can turn off ping within the router or there could be a firewall setting preventing ping, etc.

Hope this helps,

A

Aaron, my system went down and i just got it back up. I ordered another jet direct card off of E-bay and installed it. I tried pinging the new address and there is no response. I am not running a router or a firewall. I have a cable modem and a 4 port concentrator so there should be nothing to stop packet reception.since my computer crashed I now cannot change my printer settings. Apparently I have inadvertently created a rights issue. Frank

Hey Frank,

Does your 4 port network device also have a DHCP server in it? Part of the problem could be that if you are only using a hub often times with cable internet the internet provider will only give you one IP address. Once it's taken you don't get anymore. In this case you'd want to use a network router. This would take your one ip address from your cable company and give you a lot more IP addresses to work with. That seems to be the problem at this point. Although if you could please send me the model number of your 4 port network device and I can do some additional research.

Otherwise you may want to submit your permissions problem to http://ubuntuforums.org not sure if I can help much with that one...

Aaron, I am using a trend net switch. If I am reading the manual correctly this switch only goes from the computers to the net modem. I just purchased a linksys cable/dsl router. I do not have this equipment operating properly yet because I just found out that linksys/cisco only supports windows and mac. I will continue working on this problem since this piece of hardware could potentially solve my other problems. Thanks, uncle frank

Aaron IT WORKS!!! Thanks for all your help. I borrowed my brothers windows laptop to configure the router, pinged from the windows platform and the computer saw the printer. I unhooked the windows laptop and the ubuntu system could ping the printer, so I tried print test page, and it worked. Thanks again for helping with unknown multiple problems. uncle frank
