Finding a printer to buy which doesn't need proprietary software

Asked by Dominic Hargreaves

I'm trying to find a colour laser printer, ideally with scanning and copying built in, but I'll loose that if necessary, which works without the proprietary plugin (not only for idealogical reasons, but for ease of deployment across an office of diverse users, many using Linux).

Does such a beast actually exist to buy these days?

I bought a Laserjet Pro m277n without realising that hplip sometimes uses a binary-only plugin, and couldn't get it working using 'hp-setup' at all, even for basic printing.

Hi,

Please visit http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/index.html to get the details of HPLIP supported printers. If you click 'LaserJet/LaserJet MFP/Mopier' or 'Color LaserJet/Color LaserJet MFP', you will get a list of devices which shows whether the plugin is required or not for each of these devices.

'Laserjet Pro m277n' is a plugin enabled device and will not function if the proprietary plug-in is not installed.

Hope this helps

Thanks and Regards

Hi Ani,

Thanks for the reply. I'd looked at that table; the problem is that the list is huge, and most of the models aren't available for sale, so if you're in the market for a new printer it's not that useful.

Can you help with this problem?
