find printers on Windows network with HPLIP

Asked by scottspeer

Installed the latest version of HPLIP on Ubuntu. When I select Network printer, I am told that no devices are found. I am using a C6250 shared on a Windows XP network. I can find and use the printer in CUPS. What do I need to do to locate the printer on the network?

Scott,

Sharing a printer on the network is very different than a printer connected to your network and you are trying to print to.

HPLIP fully supports printers that are connected to the network and have their own IP address.

HPLIP does not support shared printers from windows systems. Although you can do a search such as:

http://www.google.com/search?q=ubuntu+print+to+shared+windows+printer&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=com.ubuntu:en-US:unofficial&client=firefox-a

and you may find some information on how this is done.

Sorry we couldn't help more.

Hi,
Just go to localhost:631, in "Administration" click to "add printer", name it somehow, on "Device for $name" select "Windows printer via SAMBA" and on next page enter "smb:/$machine_name/$rinter_queue"
Then just select the right driver and you should be done..
