HP officejet 5510 all in one poor print quality

I used to be able to print with a nice quality. No idea what's happened, I assumed the ink was running out or that the cartrdge heads had dried or something so replaces both colour and black even though ink levles were reporting as fine. Even with the new cartridges the print quality is terrible.
What happened?

Edit to say: Thinking about it, I reckon the print quality went bad like this when I upgraded to 14.04 LTS.

Gentle bump.
Wondering if htere is anything I can try to get my printer back up to the good quality print I used to have?

Hi,

It does not look like a driver issue. Can you print a test page from device front panel (if that option is available) and check the result. Otherwise please contact HP Total care for more help.

All the test pages I have printed recently whilst trying to resolve this problem have also come out poor quality.
