hplip/sane detection problem Photosmart C5250

Asked by Oko

I am using new HPLIP 2.7.10 port OpenBSD 4.3 beta in order to unlock full functionality of Photosmart C5250 all-in-one.
After the ulpt and umass drivers are disabled in the kernel OpenBSD properly see the printer as ugen device.
Hpssd daemon is started before the CUPS daemon. /etc/sane.d/dll.conf is edited but not hp.conf file nor /etc/hplip.conf files. Permissions are taken care of.

Unfortunatelly when use hp-setup no usb device is listed. sane-find-scanner can see the device but scanimage -L fails
to detect the device.

If I leave ulpt driver in the kernel the printer is usable with PPD file created from the foomatic-db via CUPS. I would guess
I could use the same PPD file and foomatic-rip to use printer via LPD.

I attached the output of hp-check, sane-find-scanner and dmesg. Any clues or comments would be highly appriciated.
Thanks
Predrag

P.S. The program seems compiled without the Python support which means that hp-toolbox is not useable.

Please run:

/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp

and post the output.

The scanner wont work until the printer is configured to be used with the HPLIP backend. So lets first try and determine how come HPLIP isn't being able to configure the printer.

Are you using any usb hubs? If so remove them and try again.

Thanks!

Dear Aaron,

Thanks for promt respond. I do not have USB hub but the computer is an older P4 DeLL Oplex which probably have 1.1 USB not the standard 2.0.

I run /usr/local/libexec/cups/backend/hp . The output is

direct hp "Unknown" HP printer (HPLIP)"

hp-info is
error no device found
error -Error occured during interactive mode

This is the output of /usr/local/libexec/cups/backend/hp -h
CUPS Backend 2.7.10

The output of tail -f /var/log/messages is
oko python2.5: hp-info[11445]error: No device found
oko python2.5: hp-info[11445]error:error occured during interactive mode exiting.

Should I edit /etc/hp/hp.conf file. That seems like a possible sourse of my troubles.

It appears that there isn't any printers configured using the hp:// backend.

If the printer is configured using hp-setup it should work. If you don't have the gui that's okay, just run hp-setup -i

Hope this helps.

Dear Aron,

I run hp-setup -i
I select usb as the location of printer. I get the message

error: No device found
error: Error occurred during the interaction mode. Exiting.

I wish, I had another older USB printer to see how it behaves but my other two HP printers R60 and LaserJet 4L are parallel port printers. Network pins on R60
are bent so I can not connect it up via the network.

Cheers,
Predrag

Aron,
So sorry to bother you one more time. Is there are way for me to specify
usb port. As you know some device nodes in Linux and BSD are denoted somewhat different. The proper device node for this thing should be

/dev/ugen0

Dear Aron,

I did some more tests. The printer and scanning did work out of box on Ubuntu 7.10. I
run Ubuntu on some old PIII which I keep for testing purposes.

 I compared the hplip.conf files

This is Ubuntu hplip.conf file

predrag@predrag-desktop:/etc/hp$ more hplip.conf
# hplip.conf. Generated from hplip.conf.in by configure.

[hpssd]
# Note: hpssd does not support dynamic ports
# Port 2207 is the IANA assigned port for hpssd
port=2207

[hplip]
version=2.7.7

[dirs]
home=/usr/share/hplip
run=/var/run
ppd=/usr/share/ppd/HP
ppdbase=/usr/share/ppd
doc=/usr/share/doc/hplip-doc/HTML
icon=no
cupsbackend=/usr/lib/cups/backend
foomatic=/usr/share/foomatic

# Following values are determined at configure time and cannot be changed.
[configure]
network-build=yes
pp-build=yes
gui-build=yes
scanner-build=yes
fax-build=yes
cups11-build=no
doc-build=yes
shadow-build=no
foomatic-xml-install=no
foomatic-ppd-install=no
internal-tag=2.7.7.27

Notice that Ubuntu hplip.conf file slightly different, The driver is older and in particular look the
lines

On Ubuntu pp-build=yes while on OpenBSD the same line is pp-build=no

The second thing is that
On Ubuntu foomatic-ppd-install=no while the same line in OpenBSD is foomatic-ppd-install=yes

Also on Ubuntu /usr/share/ppd/HP does not exist despite the fact that is listed.
Directory /usr/share/ppd/hpijs/HP does exit and looks similar to /usr/share/ppd/HP in OpenBSD.

Do above observations tell you anything about possible reasons for my troubles.
I looked also dll.conf file but it looks almost identical to my dll.conf except that hpaio is in
dll.d not in dll.conf.

Most Kind Regards

Predrag

Predrag,

Just to be clear..the error "error: No device found error: Error occurred during the interaction mode. Exiting." means that there is a device communication problem, this is unrelated to sane. Scanning will not work until the printer is configured correctly.

The pp-build=yes/no setting only indicates if parallel support is enabled. Unless you are doing some sort of exotic configuration I seriously doubt you are connecting the Photosmart C5250 via parallel.

The foomatic-ppd-install setting only indicates how the ppd drivers are created. On ubuntu they are created using DRV and on OpenBSD the foomatic-ppd-install=yes would probably be correct.

The problem you may need to resolve first on the OpenBSD system is that device communication problem.

Please keep in mind that because of configuration complexities we don't officially support OpenBSD or FreeBSD. However you may want to look here:

http://am-productions.biz/docs/hplip.php

or doing a google search such as

http://www.google.com/search?q=freebsd+hplip&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=com.ubuntu:en-US:unofficial&client=firefox-a

may help you get some more information on how to get hplip working with the BSD based systems.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

Dear Aron,

Thank you so much for your help. I am familiar with the links you left me. The Daniel's howto is basically how I learned
about HPLIP on the first place. I know that you guys do not support officially OpenBSD nor even FreeBSD.

I am at the point where I believe that the problem might be in the way that ugen driver on OpenBSD handles communication with HP printers that prevents HPLIP of detecting the printer. I posted question on misc@open but no feed back at all.

I am going through the source code for ugen driver to following the discussion at

http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-usb/2006-March/002110.html

HPLIP has been ported to Open only recently and is supposed to be the standard package starting the 4.3 release which
will happen on May 1st.

Best of luck to You and all good people of HP

Predrag Punosevac
I am not sure if the porting was mostly due to the fact that hpijs are now included in HPLIP or if the scanning and other
advanced function has been tested. The port creator was not responding to my emails.
