using the hp backend with CUPS for HP9040

Asked by kurtkbee

Hello,
I am trying to use the hp backend with CUPS and would like to get some information regarding using the hp backend.

1) do i configure the URI as DeviceURI hp://10.20.11.10:9100 ?

2) Does the hp backend for CUPS allow me to get printer status as well CUPS print job status (paper jam,tray empty,job complete,etc) ?

3) i was looking at the man pages for "backend" and i am curious if the hp backend support back-channel communication with cups (FD3) for status ?

4) will i be able to get printer and print job status if using the PPD for HP LaserJet 9040 9050 MFP Postscript and the cups printer.conf below (i.e. not using the hp backend)?

<Printer HP9040>
Info HP 9040DN
Location My desk
DeviceURI socket://10.20.11.10:9100
State Idle
StateTime 1204248121
Accepting Yes
Shared Yes
JobSheets none none
QuotaPeriod 0
PageLimit 0
KLimit 0
OpPolicy default
ErrorPolicy stop-printer
</Printer>

Thanks,

-Kurt

Kurt,

The best way to configure your printer is by running hp-setup from comand-line. Then the cups queues are automatically created correctly. You can configure the queues yourself by reviewing this document:

http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/step4/cups/index.html

We highly recommend you run hp-setup to configure the device.

As for FD3, hplip provides status functionality if the printer is using the hp backend.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I am trying to use the hp Laser jet 4000 N series printer with CUPS and would like to get some information regarding printer status.
1) Does the hp for CUPS allow me to get printer status as well CUPS print job status (paper jam,tray empty,job complete,etc) ?
2) Is it possible to get the status using any command such as "lpstat..... " or with any CUPS APIs..

now i got only status as "media- tray empty errror" = "none" only...

Regards,
rakesh.

Can you help with this problem?
