hplip-3.14.10.run failing to install dependencies.

Asked by Eric

I'm trying to install the drivers for an HP Photosmart c5280 on a system running Debian 6.0.10
It fails when it tries to install the required dependencies... specifically starting with...

Running 'su -c "apt-get install --force-yes -y python-dev"'

and continues to fail through all next dependencies.

When I try to install python-dev manually, I'm met with this error...

$ sudo apt-get install --force-yes -y python-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package python-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  python
E: Package 'python-dev' has no installation candidate

Interestingly enough, on a whim I tried running

$sudo apt-get python

where I'm met with...

sudo apt-get install python
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
python is already the newest version.
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libc6 : Depends: libc-bin (= 2.11.3-4) but 2.13-38+deb7u6 is to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

^ This may or may not have anything to do with the problem, but it could prove to be a useful clue...

My sources.list is as follows...

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ squeeze-updates main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free

I'm happy to give more info as necessary. It'd be nice to figure this out...

I figured out what my issue was. My "libc6" had been upgraded too far for my version of linux. The solution was to run

$sudo aptitude install -f

Then accept the solution that was downgrading libc6.

All is now right in the world.
