HP 1505n on Ubuntu 14.04 output too light

Hello and thanks for reading this :-)

My configuration: 1505n printer, Ubunu 14.04 configuration, hplip 3.14.6 installed.

I am getting only very light output, as if there is a draft mode, or toner conservation mode, stuck on. This same system prints nicely (very dark text) when I boot Windows, so there's nothing wrong with the hardware and the toner cartridge is not the cause. And when I follow Ubuntu's System Settings->Printers->Properties->Printer Options, it doesn't matter whether I select 'normal' or 'draft mode' for Print Quality.

Also, it's not the document software I'm using (LibreOffice). A plain text file printed with 'lpr' also comes out very faded.

HP's device manager's "general" tab offers only one output mode: grayscale. Is that a clue?
