installing HPLIP

Asked by mateusst

Dear HPLIP users/developers,

I'm trying to install HPLIP in my fc6 system, but when the HPLIP installer asks for root password it doesn't recognize it. Please see below the results from HPLIP installer:

Can you help on this issue?

All packages necessaries for HPLIP be installed are satisfied, but it appears that this isn't the cause.

but I have python-reportlab installed as shown below from yum:

python-reportlab.noarch 1.21.1-1.fc6 installed

Finally, maybe I forgot to mention that my fc6 is in portuguese.

I don't put the entire log because is very large, but if necessary I'll paste the log into a message.

Thank you,

Mateus

Mateus,

If you don't mind please paste the entire log to http://pastebin.com/ and then post the url back to the log.

It seems like there is a problem..and I'll try and reproduce on a Fedora Core 6 system. However it may take me a few days to download the iso, the only server I could find it on is very slow apparently.

Thanks!

Aaron,

I pasted the entire log in the website you mentioned. It's in http://pastebin.com/m48765564

It appears that the language (portuguese) of my fc6 is the problem. I saw (but unfortunatelly I don't remember the link to it) a quastion about a similiar issue, but with german and french language. I tried to apply the same solution given in this case, but I couldn't find the line that had to be changed.

Thank you,

Mateus

Mateus,

Please run:

su

and then just send the localized prompt. I think there is a problem with how the phrase enter password (or password) is coming up. From your log it says:

Senha:

is that correct? I'm assuming it says password.

Thanks!

Aaron,

Yes, it's correct. As my fc6 is in portuguese, when I run su, it waits the password with prompt "Senha:".

In relation to my question about python-reportlab, it was solved when I installed Reportlab 2.1 from its website (www.reportlab.org/downloads.html).
So, this problem with root's password it's the only obstacle to install hplip.

Thanks,

Mateus

You may need to do a manual install for now, we're working on correcting this for the next release. Sorry about that.

Hi Aaron,

I have installed HPLIP manually in my fc6 linux without problems in 'make' and 'make install' steps.
But, when I ran 'hp-setup', I got the following message:

error: CUPSEXT could not be loaded. Please check HPLIP installation.

I look for similiar entries here, but I only found one for Slackware, which isn't supported.

Can you help me on this?

Thanks,

Mateus

Hi Aarion,

I succeeded in making hplip work in my fc6, but I had to change my language system to English (USA). I used the hplip installer.
After do that, hplip works properly and I could use my HP All-in-one.

However, it would be great if such problems could be eliminated in next releases of HPLIP.

Thanks for the help,

Mateus

Hi Ondra,

Recently I have installed hplip in fedora 8 in portuguese. This continues to happen, but I have installed it successfully changing the environmental variable LANG. Try do this:

$ export LANG="us_US.UTF-8"
$ ./hplip-2.8.4.run

The LANG variable will be changed only for the terminal that you have typed.

I hope that it helps you.

If I understood well, the first line you provided I must type into command prompt in terminal window. I did it and nothing happened. When I lunched hplip instalation it was the same - root password was not accepted. Thank you for your tip. Do you have yet any? I would like to find a solution.

Thank you for your quick reaction.

Hi Ondra,

Sorry about my error.
In a terminal, you should type (as a regular user):

$ export LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
$ ./hplip-2.8.4.run

The LANG variable content that I provided in the last message was wrong.
Now, it should work.

Hi Mateus,

I'm sorry but this is not still working. Is any possibility how to check if variable was changed? When I typped string you offered me, nothing happened and terminal was still in Czech. My keyboard is in Czech too. When I try login as su, password prompt is in Czech. Is it so correct?

Hi Ondra,

Please, try the following sequence (always as a non-root user):

$ export LANG="en_US"
$ export LANGUAGE="en_US"
$ export |grep LANG

Both variables set the language of the system (I really forgot the last!).
If these commands did work, you should see the variables with the given values.
If it isn't still work, try changing the language of your system trough the GNOME or KDE in their Administration menu.

After that, you may run hplip installer.

Remember, you don't need to login as root. The only step that needs the root password is when you change the system language trough graphical interface (GNOME or KDE).

Please let us know if it works.

Ondra,

FYI: the export command don't returns anything. I'ts the explanation of the third command line (export | grep LANG). When you type only export in a terminal, it shows all the environmental variables. GREP just select the lines with string LANG.

FYI 2: the command lines in the previous message should be typed in the same terminal.

Good luck

Hi Ondra,

Since at home I don't have a internet connection, I had to dowload each of the missing packages needed by hplip.
It appears that even with a internet connection the needed packages weren't found.
Try to download and install manually the packages that hplip don't find (cups-devel, until now) and try run hplip installer again.

Try search in Mandrive repositories and/or in some website like http://rpmfind.net and http://rpm.pbone.net

In Fedora 8, some missing packages didn't have the name expected by hplip. So, even with a internet connection, same errors that you have will appear for me.
