Can't access HP4620 printer via Device Manager to scan

Asked by Bob Thomson

Ubuntu 12.04 won't recognize my HP Officejet 4620 printer attached via a USB port to my Acer Aspire One D270 netbook. I have to reinstall the printer driver from the HP Device Manager every time I turn the computer on. The Device Manager recognizes the printer every time, but for some reason, won't show the printer driver logo in the left hand column showing devices or the software functions in the main Device Manager window. It also retains and shows the HP4250 driver logo/device which I use in another office and have no trouble with.

It retains the 4620 fax driver and device logo but not the 4620 printer driver. When I add the driver, it prompts me for a new name which it suggests itself, e.g. 4620_2 or 4620_3, etc. When I run the HP Device Manager software I can't however see the printer in the Device Manager, even though I can see and print with the current and working driver for the printer in the print menu for each application (doc viewer, libre office, gedit, etc.). This means that I can't scan, because the 4620 fax software which I can access doesn't have a scan function. On the printer itself when I press "scan", I get the message "Computer is not found. To scan to a computer, make sure HP printer software is installed on the computer and configured."

I have several times been able to see the printer in the Device Manager and therefore scan, so I know the scan function works. The copy function works from the printer with no problems. The print function works fine wirelessly from my wife's computer in the other room.

Also, I have HPLIP 3.14.1 installed and every time I try to upgrade to 3.14.4, I get the error message in the terminal window saying "error: Failed to close either HP-Toolbox/HP-Systray. Manually close and run hp-upgrade again."

Can anyone help me fix this?

    Thanks

Hi Bob,

Please run command "hp-scan" (or) "xsane" in terminal to scan from your printer.

About printer driver logo not seen on the left hand column of hp-toolbox, please download and install latest hplip 3.14.4 from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html. After download, run command "sh hplip-3.14.4.run" in terminal to install it .

After install please delete any print queues present in "system-configure-printer" and run "hp-setup" to configure the print queue and launch "hp-toolbox" to see if printer driver logo is seen in the toolbox.

Thanks,
Goutam

I found this helpful in that I now know how to scan from a terminal
window. I successfully installed hplip-3.14.4 and installed the driver
for the HP 4620. It works and I can print. However, only the fax logo
appears in the left hand column of the Device Manager, not the printer
logo. I don't know what will happen when I shut down and reboot, but it
appears I'm back to the same situation I was in before, although now I
know how to scan from a terminal window. That 's not quite as good as
the better user interface of the HP Device Manager but at least works.

However, without being able to "see" the printer, I can't get a reading
of where the ink supply is at which is handy if it's getting low and I
need to get another cartridge.

Hi Bob,
Thank you for trying those steps. We are not able reproduce the behaviour of the issue you reported. Can you send us the screenshot of the hp device manager? . There are chances that its view properties might have got changed.  Also can you try deleting the print and fax queues from system-config-printer and reconfigure the device through hp-setup command but this time uncheck the fax queue configuration and configure only print queue and check in hp-toolbox . Do you see print queue now in toolbox?

Regards,
Goutam

Where do I find the system-config-printer in order to delete the print
and fax queues? Is that a directory, a file, something within the device
manager?

Sorry, I'm still a newbie in many ways.

system-config-printer is the command. Please type it in terminal and press enter and it should open a window in which you can see the print and fax queues same like hp device manager.

I think I've made progress. I deleted the HP4620 fax device in
hp-toolbox (Device Manager). It asked me to delete 4 printer queues and
I deleted all of them. Then I went to hp-setup and reinstalled the
HP4620 printer only (not the fax). That worked and I can see the HP4620
printer icon in hp-toolbox now. I then went back to hp-setup and this
time ticked the fax box as well. I now have both of them. I rebooted and
they're both there still so it looks like the problem is resolved.

Thanks very much for your help with this. Much appreciated.

Bob
