HPLIP on openSuSE 10.3: "open device failed; will retry in 30 seconds..."

Asked by Hellbourne

Hi,

My printer was working fine up until a few weeks ago (last time I printed). I have an HP AIO-5510 on openSuSE 10.3.

Now, however, no matter what I do, it doesn't print. The error message I see in cups (localhost:631) is:

"open device failed; will retry in 30 seconds..."

Here's a copy of my "hp-check -t". The strange bit is that most of the errors are false. For example, my "libusb" package IS installed (but I've come to understand that this isn't necessarily a problem, just that hp-check doesn't recognize the proper packages).

Amit,

Have you tried deleting the printer queues and re-adding them with hp-setup?

You can delete the printers from hp-toolbox (click and press the delete key), and then exit and re-run hp-setup.

That have any effect?

Aaron,

Yes, I tried the above. No effect. Same error message.

The symptoms look like
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342496
but unfortunately I don't know a reason.

Indeed this solves the problem, but as you (and others) write in that bugzilla link, the problem persists after turning the printer off and turning it on again as it is assigned a different bus/device number.

Is there any permanent solution that you know of ?

See
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342496#c6
which reads
-----------------------------------------
See the "controllable permissions" section in
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_name=Pine.LNX.4.64.0707040850200.22081%40nelson.suse.de
-----------------------------------------
The default entries in /etc/udev/rules.d/55-hpmud.rules
have changed (e.g. because of changes in kernel/udev land),
nevertheless my example regarding "SYSFS..." lines is still valid.

To HP:
I still do not understand why
OWNER="root", GROUP="lp", MODE="0664"
is insufficient in particular when the user is member of the "lp" group.
What might happen inside HPLIP that those permissions are insufficient?

I agree with you if the user is the member of the "lp" group and cupsd is a member of the "lp" group then MODE="0664" instead of MODE="666" should be ok.

In my case here, this printer has been working fine for YEARS, it is still running on an edition of Mandriva last updated in 2007; no part of the configuration has been changed, the only 'change' in the machine is the flip from Aug-31 to Sept-1!

but it is seized, no amount of restarts seems to put it back.

Can you help with this problem?
