Faxing from Linux to an HP LaserJet 9040MFP

Asked by jerryb

In my office there is an HP LaserJet 9040 MFP. I can send a fax from the printer itself, but would like to do so from my linux workstation. However, when I try to set it up I get errors like this:

hp-makeuri -f 10.18.16.253
error: Device does not support fax.

The device most certainly supports fax, as I can fax from the device itself.

What does this error message really mean?
How can I get past the error message?
How can I then set up CUPS to send faxes to this device?

Jerry,

HPLIP does support the Laserjet 9040mfp, however we only support it for printing only at this time.

We are working to hopefully support fax in the future. Currently I am unaware of any driver that supports faxing for this device.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Aaron
