Installation hangs at Printer Setup

Asked by Theriex

I'm unable to get HPLIP 2.8.2 fully installed. I run the installer and let it go through everything automatically and when it hits Printer Setup it hangs for 5 minutes and then times out with the following error:

error: No output seen in over 300 sec... (Is the CD-ROM/DVD source repository enabled? It shouldn't be!)
fatal error: :hplip-install
error: hp-setup failed. Please run hp-setup manually

I have followed all the instructions and I have made sure that the repository IS disabled and that isn't the problem.

Trying to run hp-setup manually gives some copyright information and then it hangs.

Any thoughts?

If you run hp-setup manually does it still hang?

If it does run:

hp-setup -g

and post the output to pastebin.com and then post the link back url here and I'll check out the log.

Also it seems that hp-check is hanging during device discovery. Is the printer in an odd state? Power power cycle the printer, disconnect and reconnect. Same problem?

Thanks!

I ran hp-setup manually yesterday and it still hangs.

The output from hp-setup -g is here: http://pastebin.com/m40b80a6e

The printer is in a normal state, but I power cycled it and disconnected and reconnected the USB cable and it still hangs. Note that it hangs showing the same copyright information shown at the bottom of the output from hp-setup, not that that helps any :)

I forgot to mention - I am able to use the printer through other programs, like Kooka for instance.

Apparently it's hanging when running hpssd. Run:

sudo tail -f /var/log/messages

then in another teriminal run hp-setup again and then post the messages in the /var/log/messages.

Unfortunately it gives no messages.

Note when i run hp-setup I get: http://pastebin.com/m7f0569f6

Where it just hangs.

Hmm okay.

Please run:

ps ax | grep hpssd

and post the output.

Thanks!

so that means hpssd is running at least right?

No it means it's not.

That's okay, usually it will start when you try and run hplip, (hp-setup, hp-toolbox, etc.), but for some reason it's not.

I'm thinking maybe there are 2 (or more) installs of hplip conflicting.

Lets try this:

sudo apt-get remove hplip hpijs

(Careful with this next one, "rm -rf" will delete the entire directory so make sure to not mis type this, we don't want to remove /usr or /usr/share that would be very bad.)

sudo rm -rf /usr/share/hplip

and then re-install hplip as you did last time.

and try again. any difference?

I am doing as you suggest, but something came up during the uninstall which caught my attention:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  foomatic-db-hpijs hpijs kubuntu-desktop

Why is it removing kubuntu-desktop? I hope thats not gonna screw anything up :(

Oh damn, ok umm, i tried to run the install and something happened and now all the files are extracted in ~, what a mess, how can i clean that up?

Removing kubuntu-desktop isn't a problem. The kubuntu-desktop is a meta package and wont actually remove kubuntu.

As for everything being in ~...sadly you'll have to delete each file and directory by hand..

Sorry there isn't a more elegant solution.

Ok well I went through everything you suggested (after removing those files and directories from ~, i sorted it by date to make it easier) and unfortunately it is doing the same thing, it hangs at Printer Setup and the times out with an error after 5 minutes.

Guess we're not having much luck :(

Hello, I have the same error message when I do "sh hplip-2.8.2.run" :

DEPENDENCY AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION
----------------------------------
Running 'sudo apt-get install --yes --force-yes build-essential libcupsys2-dev cupsys-bsd libusb-dev libjpeg62-dev openssl libsnmp-dev libsane-dev python-imaging libsane xsane cupsddk cupsddk-drivers'
Please wait, this may take several minutes...
-error: No output seen in over 300 sec... (Is the CD-ROM/DVD source repository enabled? It shouldn't be!)
fatal error: :hplip-install
error: Package install command failed with error code 1
Would you like to retry installing the missing package(s) (y=yes*, n=no, q=quit) ?

I just reinstall the system (Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy) and reuse my old home directories. There was an older HPLIP version installed before reinstalling Kubuntu and now, with the 2.8.2, I've got this error and I can't install the driver.

I use a Photosmart C5180 by Ethernet, but I think it's not relevant. Any solution ?
