HP LaserJet 4100N "Error: Unable to communicate with device"

Asked by Chris Goodchild

Hi there,

My trusty, if rather old, HP LaserJet 4100N (with JetDirect card) mysteriously stopped working yesterday - I am not _aware_ of any changes being made to my environment.

The printer itself works insofar as I can print out the configuration page using the printer's on-board menu/buttons.
I can ping the device and web to the printer's IP address to configure it without any problems.

I updated HPLIP as previously I just had whatever version shipped with Ubuntu 12.04

I have tried "hp-setup -r" and removed the (only) printer followed by "hp-setup" and installed it again however it still fails to print.

hp-check yields the following:

Hi,

Can you provide us some more logs by running hp-logcapture

$ sudo hp-logcapture

Meanwhile, as it is old printer try libusb-0.1 instead of libusb-1.0 (hplip-3.13.11 uses libusb-1.0 by default). Follow below steps:-

--> go to hplip-3.13.11 source directory (assuming hplip-3.13.11.run is downloaded in ~/Downloads folder)
$ cd ~/Downloads/hplip-3.13.11

--> run configuration and make
$ ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-libusb01_build
$ make clean
$ make
$ sudo make install

--> remove queue and reconfigure.
--> Try printing

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Hi Amarnath,

Thanks for looking at this.

I've run the hp-logcapture... however I don't seem to be able to upload the tar.gz to this ticket at the moment...

I installed libusb01 as directed, but alas, still no joy :(

Thanks,
Chris.

Ok, this is slightly odd, but after a couple more removals and additions of the printer (still with the libusb01) it has suddenly started working... I have no idea what was different this time

Thanks for looking.
Chris.
