LaserJet M2727 linux scan - HPLIP driver status?

Asked by hanzl

Are there any news about the LaserJet M2727 linux scan support?

Still intended? Still no ETA?

Unfortunately, LaserJet 3390 cannot be bought anymore, so linux users looking for similar device have no luck with HP at the moment :-((

Thanks,

Vaclav

Vaclav,

The HP LaserJet M2727 will be supported by hplip in the near future. However I'm sorry to report that scanning will not be supported. I can't promise any eta on when/if scanning will be supported, however we are working to hopefully add this functionality sometime in a future release.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Thanks for the answer, thought I am not happy to hear it - if my search is right, at the moment there is nothing to replace nice SOHO solution LaserJet 3390. Scan support for M2727 would be really appreciated by many I think.

After hours of search and phone calls, I have this unconfirmed yet very optimistic info which might be of interest to others with similar problem:

Linux users may be able to scan with M2727 even without HPLIP support, like this:
- setup SMTP server on your linux box (or use your existing servers)
- setup your email address using M2727 web interface
- use scan-to-email from M2727 buttons

This was not possible with 3390 - thought this older model should also support scan-to-email, this function uses local (Windows) PC and can only be set up from Windows (not from web interface). New M2727 is said to work standalone - no local PC needed for scan-to-email to work.

I would be really happy if anybody with access to M2727 can verify this (at least verify that scan-to-email can be setup vie web interface and does not need local Windows PC).

Thanks,

Vaclav

Vaclav,

That's great information! I haven't had a chance to verify but it seems like a viable option. If you are able to verify this works please let me know.

The scan to email probably doesn't work because the user guide tells that it doesn't use SMTP.

"NOTE: Scanning to e-mail is supported by any e-mail program that supports the Messaging
Application Programming Interface (MAPI) protocol. Many versions of popular e-mail programs seem
to be MAPI-compliant. See the support information for your e-mail program to determine whether or not
it is MAPI-compliant."

So I guess it is more of a "scan to a Windows program that opens email application automatically" than
real scan to email.

The embedded web server doesn't seem to have any SMTP configuration options either. Hopefully
the following link works.
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c01232449&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=1839458

Anyway, I've also been looking for a decent SOHO MFP and M2727 seems to be the choice because
retailers don't have 3390 anymore. So here's one person more hoping that the scan functionality could
be added.

I just saw and advertisement for M3035 in a paper and based on user guide it seems that
it has real scan to email (SMTP) and scan to network share. And the machine was on
sale for half a price. Unfortunately the half price is still almost three times the cost of M2727 :-(

Pity that these functions are only available in more expensive models.
