Do i need to uninstall old version of hplip before upgrading to a new version?

Asked by Breathe

I was wondering if I needed to uninstall an older version of hplip before upgrading to a new version through compilation method. I am using Ubuntu Gutsy and I installed it from the repo's (ver. 2.7.7) but it isn't working very well in evince when trying to print pdf's (It prints, but it changes some characters, doesn't print in double-sided mode and other crazy things). I would like to try the newer version (ver. 2.7.12) compiling it but i wasn't sure if i needed to uninstall the old version of hplip before doing this. Does someone have the answer? Thank you in advanced...

Yes it's usually best to remove the pre-installed hplip (or of any package) before installing a new version.

sudo apt-get remove hplip

Should take care of it. :)

Also if you are installing from our website be sure to run the below before installing:

sudo apt-get install libsnmp-dev

Ubuntu changed the package name of this hplip dependency, and hplip will not install without it. This has been fixed in the next version of hplip.

Sorry about that!
