HP Laserjet P 1102w basic driver

Asked by Janos G. Komaromi

Is there a basic driver for 1102W that enables printing and does not require plugin? I have an old Fedora 3 distro incompatible with the latest HPLIP but a new printer. All I need is a basic driver without bells and whistles, i.e. enhanced capabilities.

Thanks, janos

Hi Janos,

Plugin is must for this printer for printing. If you can let us know which version of CUPS is installed in your OS i can help you with installing HPLIP and plugin.

You can check the cups version either from "cups-config --version" command or from cups UI "localhost:631" in web-browser.

Thanks,
Goutam

Hi Goutam,

Thank you for your quick and constructive response. Here is my situation:

My FC3 distro is all mangled up, but I like it the way I customized: twm window manager, all may applications compiled from source. The kernel is 2.6.20, compiled by myself and adopted to my motherboard capability. I got stuck when I tried to go to newer kernel: I ran into the new udev architecture. So I stopped there. It was good for me to learn a lot about linux.

I also have an Xubuntu current installation on my 2nd hard drive, and the new HP printer works there well.

But I still would like to print from my FC3. Is there a way?

My cups (complied from source) is 1.4.6. I compiled hplip 2.6.12 from source. It compiled OK, but hp-setup does not find the new P1102w printer on the wireless. So I tried to compile hplip 3.13.9 from source, but ran into configure issues. Specifically, libudev or something like that was the obstacle. This is when I posted my question on this launchpad.

Hi Janos,

Can you provide us the configure command output ?
HPLIP depends on certain dependent packages. I am not sure if all those dependencies are met. For more info you can check the manual installation installations link http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/fedora_core.html.

Thanks,
Goutam

Thank you, Goutam, for getting back to me. Yes, it is dependency: libusb, and finally libudev. I gave up and found another solution.

SOLUTION - how to make HP Laserjet Professional P 1102W work on older machines:

Removed HP-lip (was 2.8.12) - but this is only for house cleaning. I also removed cups that I updated in the process trying to make my new printer work.

Compiled cups 1.4.6,
recompiled Ghostscript 9.0.2, foomatic-filters 4.0.6, and
compiled foo2zjs.

Now the printer works from my old, mangled, bastardized FC3 linux, and I'm happy.

I also installed Windows Postscript drivers on the same old FC3 machine (cups and samba), and now my old W200 Dell laptop and an even older W95 desktop machine (that I hardly ever turn on) can print to the brand new HP Laserjet P 1102w using the linux machine as print server.

It is fair to say that the printer installed flawlessly on my W7 Acer laptop or on xubuntu 12.04 using hp-plugin.
