Problems printing Ubuntu 13.04 with HPLIP 3.13.8 - LaserJet P4015n

Asked by Keith Clayton

Hi . . new to Ubuntu but not new to Linux distros or CUPS.

I'm having some troubles getting my office's networked LaserJet P4015n working with CUPS/HPLIP. Spent a bunch of time working with Ubuntu's default tools and no joy.

Started by printing the printers config page. Not running IPP . . does have the JetDirect card visible on 9100. I can ping my printer and nmap shows 9100 open. Tried setting it up both with Ubuntu's Jetdirect support and then using HPLIP . . neither got me anywhere.

Started poking around the web and found the latest version of HPLIP on HP's website. Downloaded and upgraded that without issue. Deleted my printer and recreated it with Ubuntu tools . . still no joy.

Found additional info here which recommended using system-config-printer to delete any existing print queues, run hp-plugin and then recreate the print queues.

Did that without any obvious issues and my HP P4015n reports toner levels, etc. Everything looks to be in order but when I try to print a test page I get nothing . . no error or anything. I go to the printer and its just sitting there in sleep mode.

I do see this line in the cups error log
[cups-driverd] Bad driver information file "/usr/share/cups/drv/cupsfilters.drv"
but not sure where to go with this . . googling around didn't help much.

Last bit is that I ran hp-check and it finished fine with no warnings or errors and hp-doctor and it ran through fine, showed all dependencies as OK . . nothing missing and showed that communication with my printer was good.

Any advice on where to head next would be greatly appreicated.

Thanks,
Keith
