HPlip and avahi-tools in Mandriva

Asked by Squeek

I am trying to install HPlip for my HP e5510 onto Mandriva 2010.0.

I have followed the instructions on the HP site, did (eventually) the urpmi bit which was only really necessary for the avahi-tools. Unfortunately avahi-tools is still not avaialable?

Can I proceed anyway - and, assuming all other dependencies are now satisfied, should I continue with manual install or could I revert to automatic?

Hi Squeek,

Please install "avahi" from software Manager and later you can continue either with auto installation/manual installation.

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Hi Amarnath

Proceeded with autoinstall. Only a couple of (non-fatal?) hitches -

RUNNING POST-PACKAGE COMMANDS
-----------------------------
su - -c "/etc/init.d/cups restart" (Post-depend step 1)
warning: An error occurred running ' su - -c "chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp"'
 su - -c "chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp" (Post-depend step 2)
OK

RE-CHECKING DEPENDENCIES
------------------------
warning: An optional dependency 'passwd_util (GUI Password utility (gksu/kdesu))' is still missing.
warning: Some features may not function as expected.

passwd is available and installed but not passwd_util (but only optional dependency anyway).

Otherwise seems to be installed ok but not detecting (wifi) printer - perhaps a problem with avahi...?

Hi Squeek,

Yes, password util package might not be available for Mandriva so you can ignore this message.

However, for Wifi configuration please follow below steps (If IP is not assigned to printer).
1) Connect the printer to system using USB and run this command
    $ hp-wificonfig
--> follow navigation, IP will be assigned

2) run following command with IP address
    $ hp-setup <IP address>

Please let us know if you need more information.

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Thanks Amarnath.

I should perhaps explain that I have several multi-boot machines and they have mostly already been set up in both Windows and Linux to communicate quite happily with the HPe5510. It is only problematical with older Linux where an up-to-date HPLip has, to extent, to be "forced".

The printer already has an IP address - should I assume that it is static whilst the rest of infrastrucure is dynamic? In the circumstance, I decided to use the HPLip GUI dialogue to tell it the assigned IP and it was immediately "discovered".

The only problem now is that it pops up the message -

Printer queue setup failed. Could not connect to Cups Server. Is user added to "sys" groups(s)

So the setup doesn't add the printer but the tray icon says its connected but idle!

Using the Mandriva Printing Setup, again the printer is seen, but it wants to install task-printing-hp, xsane and libsane-hpalo1. The first two are already installed (the first I think was an earlier optimistic attempt to get the printer recognized!).

[NB There are two other functioning printers on the n/w via wireless server].

Sorted - had to run hp-setup as root from a terminal.
