HP 3070A will not scan to PC

Asked by Trevor

I cannot in Ubuntu get the printer to scan an image and create a pdf image on the PC. Printing from the PC is perfect, but if I need to create a document to email I have to reboot the PC in Windows. As I want to dispense with windows I would really like to crack this annoyance.
Todate I have re-installed HPLIP, checked every setting I can find.
When I press the scan button the printer reports "Computer not found. Ensure the HP software has been installed on the PC"

For any error, run in terminal 'hp-doctor' and provide the output.

To do scanning, run 'xsane'. Then change type to PDF. Now you can scan, it will save the scanned image in pdf format.

For multiple scanning, select multipage and scan.

Can you help with this problem?
