Printer over TCP/IP port, via D-Link DI-524UP router

Asked by Jano Labs

There is the D-Link DI-524UP router, that has a USB port for printers. My LaserJet 1200 is connected to that and works fine with different Windows versions. But after I managed to install the driver (see: https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/23140 ) I couldn't configure the printer.

So to say, it's tricky to install even under Windows, but the manual explains everything in detail. Please see ftp://ftp.dlink.hu/di/di-524up/documentation/DI-524UP_man_eng_Manual.pdf starting page 87 according to pdf sites (page 82 according to printed site numbering). /This is the how-to to Windows 2000. Don't read the WinXP part, it is misunderstood./

I should create that TCP/IP port and set the "lp1" queue list. But I can't in this Linux version. The only options I have is to decide to use the USB port or the Network. Selecting Network, I can't find the printer, but it's normal - Windows wouldn't find it either.

So, after reading the corresponding part of the manual, what do you think, is it possible to install my printer? Or guys at HP, do you work on the problem / have the idea to add this feature to the driver in the future?

Thanks,
John

John,

We have only tested HP Jetdirect devices. For HPLIP to work correctly the router would need to do several things, give the printer an IP address, and allow hplip to communicate with the printer over snmp.

If you have an IP address for the printer, you can check to see if snmp is working by running:

hp-makeuri <ip address>

If hp-makeuri returns the printer info such as:

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.7.12)
Device URI Creation Utility ver. 4.3

Copyright (c) 2001-7 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it
under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

CUPS URI: hp:/net/Photosmart_3300_series?ip=xx.xxx.xxx.xxx
SANE URI: hpaio:/net/Photosmart_3300_series?ip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
HP Fax URI: hpfax:/net/Photosmart_3300_series?ip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Then you should be good to go. If it doesn't return something like this, then the D-Link router may not allow the printer to return it's information correctly (or might not be letting hplip communicate with the printer correctly.) Either way it's beyond our control at that point.

Hope this helps...sorry I couldn't help more!

Aaron

According to the manual I've linked, the IP address as the same as the router's, so 192.168.0.1

hp-makeuri says error: Device not found. Tried some IP's came to my mind, but worthless... So thanks anyway Aaron, for helping to install the driver :)

(Hmm, I could attach the printer to my FreeBSD box instead of the router... Is that OS supported? Or another way to make the printer work?)

Jano,

FreeBSD isn't exactly supported. We haven't configured it here or set it up. However a user as configured HPLIP to work with FreeBSD and you can get more info here:

http://am-productions.biz/docs/hplip.php

Thanks for your support of HPLIP, all the best!

Aaron
