install laserjet 1536dnf on suse enterprise desktop 11

Asked by deman pierre

Hello,

I tried to install the driver for the laserjet 1536dnf on the last version of suse enterprise (the 11). but it's not working.

the problem is that there is no driver for suse. I tried with the driver for opensuse that you propose but it's not working.
I don't have any error message but the installation is never finishing.
it keeps trying to do something after I enter to root password but nothing happen.

do you know what would be the solution ?

Pierre

I assume your "laserjet 1536dnf" is actually
a "HP LaserJet m1536dnf MFP".

According to
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_m1536dnf_mfp.html
---------------------------------------------------
HP LaserJet m1536dnf MFP

Minimum HPLIP version 3.11.1
...
This printer REQUIRES a downloadable driver plug-in.
Use hp-setup to install the printer, and to download
and install the plug-in.
In general, required driver plugins are required for
printing support.
Driver plug-ins are released under a proprietary
(non-open) license and are not part of the
HPLIP tarball release.
...
APDK device class(es): Postscript
---------------------------------------------------
the HP LaserJet m1536dnf MFP
requires a proprietaty plugin that is
required for printing support.
but it ia also a PostScript printer.

I don't know about this particular model
but regular PostScript printers do not need
any kind of driver software to print under Linux.

In particular regular PostScript printers
do not need any kind of proprietaty plugin
to print under Linux.

Something is strange with the
HP LaserJet m1536dnf MFP

Only the experts at HP could tell
why the HP LaserJet m1536dnf MFP
belongs to the APDK device class "Postscript" but
does not behave as a regular PostScript printer.

Regarding "Minimum HPLIP version 3.11.1"
and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11:

Since SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP 1
we provide HPLIP version 3.11.10
so that the HP LaserJet m1536dnf MFP
should work out of the box when you
have SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 SP1.

Regarding "tried with the driver for opensuse":

See
https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=Printing
------------------------------------------------------
The "Printing" project may contain new, upcoming
software. Therefore the packages in the "Printing"
project might neither be in a stable state nor fit
well into currently installed systems.
Have this in mind if you think about to install
packages from the "Printing" project into your
currently running system.
Do not use "Factory" if your system is
not "Factory". Use the matching packages
for your particular system.
The packages in the "Printing" project are
only for testing, without any guarantee
or warranty, and without any support.
As an extreme example, this means if your
complete computer center crashes because
of those packages, it is only your problem.
On the other hand this does not mean that those
packages are known to be terrible broken but
they are not thoroughly tested so that any
unexpected issue can happen.
------------------------------------------------------

FYI:
I run the current HPLIP packages from the
"Printing" project on my SUSE Linux Enterprise 11
workstations and for me it works of course
but there is no guarantee that it also works
for you in your environment with your printer.

Currently I provide HPLIP version 3.13.4
in the "Printing" development project
of the openSUSE build service
for various SUSE distributions
in particular also for
SUSE Linux Enterprise 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP1
SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP2

For direct access to the RPMs go to
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/
and select what matches exactly your system and
your architecture (32 bit i586 versus 64 bit x86_64).

openSUSE provides HPLIP in the RPM packages
hplip, hplip-hpijs and hplip-sane.

When you have a support contract with SUSE,
use your official support contact and verify
whether or not it is o.k. when you install
HPLIP from the "Printing" development project
of the openSUSE build service on your
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 system.
