Format the 'scan to' button on all in one devices be enabled

Asked by gorstj

I have a HP Officejet 7140xi all in one on a network.

I would like to be able to use the 'scan to' button on the printer.

How does the printer discover what available clients there are for scanning to. Is this using 'bonjour' (xerocong etc.) to locate targets?

What format does the printer send the scan in? Is the jpeg/pdf/tiff file actually created in the printer or is the raw scan format sent?

If it was sending a jpeg to a socket identified by bonjour, it 'should' be fairly easy to knock up a simple 'send to' client to recieve such files? This could be independant of the hplip project if necessary.

Sorry we don't support the scan to: feature that is included with some printers. We may or may not in the future, although at this time it's not on the list because of technical difficulties.

Thanks for your support of HPLIP!

Aaron, sorry to butt in here. Is the protocol publicly available from HP to implement this feature?

I'm interested in the L7580 specifically.

Thanks,
Roger

I'm also very interested in this feature.
Did you find some documentation?
I would be satisfied if I could register options on the printer, and to be notified when one was selected (for example
to start a script)

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask gorstj for more information if necessary.
