HPOJ5610 Makes noises but does not print test page

Asked by Adam Reed

I have hplip (2.7.7.dfsg.1-0ubuntu5) and am trying to print (via smb) to an HP Officejet 5610 All-in-one that's shared from a Windows XP system. Printing from Windows clients to the share works fine. When installing the smb share as a new printer from an Ubuntu 7.10 system with PHLIP, I select the 5600 series driver, the connection is established and everything seems OK, but when I try to print a test page the printer just makes the same noises as when a page is about to be printed to that same share from a Windows client - but then nothing is actually printed. Not only does printing stop, but the Windows XP box is stuck and I can't cancel the job without rebooting it.

My Ubuntu 7.10 is on a system without a USB port of its own, so I cannot test the printing with a direct connection. Has anyone ever managed to print to an HP Officejet 5610, directly or indirectly, from HPLIP? Any hints on what I may be doing wrong?

Currently we don't provide support for this configuration. Although in the future I'll be going through this process and detailing a how to on this. For now though if you search for something like this:

http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+print+to+windows+shared+printer&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=com.ubuntu:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

You may find a how to on this.

I can tell you that printing to the OfficeJet 5610 does work over usb with hplip and ubuntu.

Sorry for the inconvenience and hope this helps!

Thank you, Aaron.

For now, I've connected the printer to an older machine with a USB port - it does work with Linux/PHLIP. It works fine remotely on port 631, which I guess is the best that I could hope for with both Windows and Linux users on the network.

When I added "5610" to the Google search linked above, all I got was several descriptions of the problem that I had just described. So there are many of us out there who would very much like to have a real solution. I don't like needing a separate machine just as a print server, so I guess I'm looking forward to a real answer.

Maybe I'm confused at what you are trying to do?

The OfficeJet 5610 is fully supported by HPLIP, and I've tested this device in the past with no problems using USB.

Sharing a printer from windows to linux is very possible, albeit can be difficult to setup.

Sharing the printer from linux to windows is also possible.

However in both these cases HPLIP does not support this configuration.

As a possible alternative one could use an HP Jetdirect device to connect the printer to the network and then Windows and Linux can use their native driver to connect to the device. Although I haven't tested this on windows it is my understanding that windows does support for printing to a networked printer.

If you planned on going this route please keep in mind that HPLIP only supports HP JetDirect devices. Although there are alternatives that can provide networking a usb printer they are not supported.

Hope this helps.

"Sharing a printer from windows to linux is very possible, albeit can be difficult to setup."

I've shared other printers from Windows to Linux without any problem. My 5610 replaces an R80 that was shared from Windows to Linux. I, and other people writing in comments I found through your Google search link, found that the procedures that allow sharing other HP all-in-one printers from Windows to Linux do not work for the 5610, and that sending a print job from Linux to a 5610 shared from a Windows XP system causes the print facility on the XP system to freeze until the job is cancelled AND the XP system is rebooted.

I'm working around this problem by sharing the 5610 from Linux, but now Windows machines can only print and do not have access to other functions of the 5610.

A real answer to my query would be a TESTED procedure for sharing a 5610 - not just any HP all-in-one, but specifically a 5610 - from Windows to Linux. I understand that HPLIP does not support this, but I still need a solution. If you don't know how to solve this problem, please leave my query open so that perhaps someone else, who happens to know of a solution, might happen across my query and help me solve it.

Adam,

I can understand your frustration. If you don't mind I'm going to set this to answered, although if someone does happen upon it via google or something they can always send an update.

This process isn't support by hplip and it will help me with tracking the other open tickets to resolve as many as I can, if you get me.

Of course resolving this is important, and it's on my to do list to create this process documentation and while I do that I will test the OfficeJet 5610. Although I don't have any eta on when I'll be able to do that. I'm hoping within the next few releases.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Aaron
