scan in Photosmart 5520 says computer not found

Asked by jerrydc

With great fear used Terminal in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to install hplip 3.13.3. Am using usb connection; not interested in wireless on new Photosmart 5520 all-in-one. When press Scan on printer window, get msg "no computer found." Did run hp-check -t as you suggested. Have a long log file which, I suppose, I could post. It doesn't seem to me to indicate any problem. However, when click on Device Manager and then diagnose HLIP driver, results appear in Terminal with "Warning," two ques found and I should get rid of one (or something like that). I don't understand this lingo. Would appreciate telling me what should be done, if anything, and what to expect, or not expect, using hplip 3.13.3. BTW, Synaptic Manager didn't get the download. It still has the 2. version (if that is of any consequence). I can print and copy from the Photosmart. Should I just stop and count my blessings? Please understand that I am a beginner and would hate to use Terminal much more.

Thank you

Run in terminal 'system-config-printer' and delete all the existing queues.

Now run 'hp-setup' when the device is connected to the machine. It will detect the device and you should be able to setup the device. Next run in terminal 'xsane' for scanning.

Do let us know if you face any problem.

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

When I typed in "system..." I got the Printing-Local Host box with two icons -- Photosmart-5520-series, and Photosmart_ 5520. I was surprised to wind up with the two icons when I finished downloading HPLIP, but thought that's the way they want it and made the 5520-series icon my default. Are they called queues? If so, delete them, and then run "hp-setup" ?

Are you suggesting that after downloading xsane I could use it via the scan button on the printer?

Thank you for being patient.

Jerry

Make sure only one queue should be there for a printer.

Xsane is an application which runs on the computer. Scan icon on the printer is not related to this.

If you want to scan from host/computer, install xsane and scan.

For scanning from device using scan button on it, we won't support in Linux.

When I click on the icon for each 5520 printer, then Properties and then View Printer Queue, there are no jobs waiting to be printed. I always complete printing all my material before leaving print mode, i.e. I never leave anything in the queue to be printed at some later time.

Thank you for clarifying just what xsane is and how to use it.

Hi,

Xsane is a application to perform scan functionality.
Install 'xsane' package from Synaptic Package manager/Software Center.

Run Xsane, if this is not detecting the scanner. Please providing following logs

1) run 'hp-scan -g' command in terminal and provide the output here.
2) run 'hp-check' command in terminal and provide the output here.

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Hello and thank you,

Xsane is installed. I called it up, got two dialogue (?) boxes, clicked on scan (of a part of a newspaper page), named the image, saved it to my desktop, and got a narrow blank image when I opened the file. I give up. I just don't have time to play with computers and their programs hour after hour.

I would appreciate a reply to my question above about queues. If you don't have anymore time to spend on this, please mark my question solved and let's be done with this.

Thank you and I do appreciate your trying to help.

Jerry

Hello Jerry,

Please delete all the existing queues and run 'hp-setup'. Once setup is over, run in terminal 'xsane'. Change the type in the dropdown box to 'jpeg' or 'pdf' which is your choice. Make sure, you have selected the proper scan area. For this, press 'Ctrl + 6' to see the advanced window. Make top-left (x, y) to zero and bottom-right (x, y) to maximum.

Now you can press scan button.

If this has solved your query, please change the status to 'solved'.

Can you help with this problem?
