SNMP-less hplib?

Asked by David Callebaut

After trying to find the solution to a communications error I got consistently in the HPlib client on Linux Mint 13 (and other distros) for months and months finally today I found the solution...

I need to enable SNMP at least in read-only mode and have the standard community string of "public" set on my HP Laserjet 100 MFP. Once that is done I have no communication errors anymore.

"Great!" one would think. Especially since I've been searching for the solution about 3 months now...

But enabling, even in read-only, SNMP with default settings is very insecure for plenty of reasons (see: http://www.ee.ucl.ac.uk/lcs/previous/LCS2003/102.pdf) I won't go in detail about.

So my question basically is: when will HPLIB have it's communication based on something else than the insecure SNMP? Or when will it use SNMPv3 (which is much more secure)?
