Ubuntu 12.04 won't find printer (HP Laserjet p2015dn) after reading several forums

Asked by ikman

Ubuntu 12.04 ( Kernel: 3.2.0-38-generic) won't find printer. I've read several forum posts and tried all I could. Printer will stop being found on a regular basis since an update of a few months ago. Started having to reinstall hplip, etc. before it would work again. This time, printer just refused to be found.

I tried reinstalling hplip driver (That is what usually would fix it)
 http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html

I tried CUPS method
 http://localhost/631

After many tries of hp-setup both from command line and GUI I ran

$sudo system-config-printer

and deleted the queue, but there were no usb printers to add, only parallel (LPT#1) and URI network. My HP p2015

Then started over

I tried
ikmguy@ikmguy-desktop:~$ kdesudo sh hplip-3.12.4-plugin.run
sh: 0: Can't open hplip-3.12.4-plugin.run
ikmguy@ikmguy-desktop:~$ ls -al hp*

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

Can you restart your machine and the printer? After reboot, run in terminal 'lsusb'. If should display the printer. If it doesn't, then there is some other issue.

Once printer is detected, run in terminal 'hp-setup'.

Sometimes when I restart computer and printer, lsusb finds the printer and sometimes it doesn't. When it does, hp-setup still doesn't find the printer. Below is a case where lsusb did find it but hp-setup did not

ikmguy@ikmguy-desktop:~$lsusb

Hello,

I think, SmartInstall has been enabled in the device. Can you please download and install the latest hplip-3.13.3? Reconnect the device to the machine. It will to disable smart install.

Once smartInstall has been disabled, it will detect as a printer.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask ikman for more information if necessary.
