HP Officejet 4500 won't print on Ubuntu 12.10 and Linux Mint 14

Asked by Christian Dysthe

I have used hp-setup to install my HP Officejet 4500 without problems until I updated to Ubuntu 12.10 and Linux Mint 14. The printer is hooked up to my router. The printer still installs and I am able to scan, but when I try to print I get a popup with the title "Driver Plug-in Required. It also says "HP Device proprietary plug-in is missing. Click 'Next' to continue plug-in installation. When I click next I get another popup where I can either download and install the plug-in from an HP authorized server (recommended) or Select and install a local copy. If I choose the first option I get yet another popup about digital signature, then a popup where I accpet the terms and finally an error popup saying "Plug-in install failed". If I ignore the plug-in the printer spits out an almost blank page with a line of gibberish on it. In Ubuntu 12.04 and Mint 13 it worked fine. How can I get hp-setup to work again for the Officejet 4500? I've seen that there are several reports on this problem on both the Ubuntu and Mint forums, but no solutions. I would like to add that the printer installs through the printer interface in Ubuntu/Mint and prints, but it doesn't scan, so I have to install it again using hp-setup to get a second install of the printer I use for scanning.

Hi,

Can you please let us know which version of HPLIP is installed?

Please post us following command output
$ hp-check
$ hp-plugin -g

If HPLIP is older version than 3.13.2, please install latest (3.13.2) from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html.

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

I'm using hplip 3.12.6 which comes with Ubuntu 12.10 and Linux Mint 14. I would prefer installing using deb, but I will look into installing using the HP installer. Should i uninstall the deb based hplip before I install using the HP installer?

When trying to install the plugin I get in the terminal:

Plug-in version: 3.12.6
Installed HPLIP version: 3.12.6
Number of files to install: 50

error: Plug-in install failed.

Done.

I did install the latest version using the .run file, but my printer which is hooked up to my network is not detected. cups and the built in printer interface in the OS detects it, but hplip doesn't. The deb installed hplip detects and installs the printer but it can't print.

Can you help with this problem?
