CUPSEXT note
I wanted to upgrade from HPLIP-3.10.2 (on Ubuntu 10.04) to 3.12.10a, so that my new Photosmart 7520 was supported. Since I didn't want a clash with the existing installed packages, I uninstalled them. When I then ran ./hplip-
CUPSEXT could not be loaded. Please check HPLIP installation.
Reinstalling all the hplip packages, and re-running ./hplip-
This is a case where the software was more user-friendly than I was expecting it to be! Would it be worth putting a note in the page on automatic installs:
http://
to say that if you have hplip already installed (at least on Ubuntu), you should leave it there so that the install can be started, and that the install will take care of uninstalling existing packages?
Another note in passing: when I was installing hplip on another PC which had a wireless connection to the network (to which the 7520 was also attached by wireless), it detected the printer, but could not go beyond that page to finish the setup - it said it could not communicate with the printer. However, when I plugged a network cable into the PC, it finished the setup OK.
Thanks for the software!

Hi Kevin Donnelly,
This fix is available in next HPLIP release. Meanwhile, following work around can be done to install hplip-3.12.10a
$cd ~/Desktop (i.e. assuming hplip-3.12.10a.run file is downloaded to Desktop, change accordingly).
$ sh hplip-3.12.10a.run
--> press 'q'. During "Please choose the installation mode(a=automatic*, c=custom,q=quit):" prompt.
$ cd hplip-3.12.10a
$ gedit installer/
--> remove following lines.
Line no: 33
==> from prnt import cups
Line no: 769
==> cups.getSystemP
$ python ./install.py
Sorry causing the trouble.
Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Hi Amarnath
Thanks for the suggested patches - I don't need them now, but they're useful to know about!
Hmm. Some weird voodoo going on in hp-setup. There's no way to attach files here, so far as I can see, so I have to just paste the contents? That means I won't post the various files I made at different stages, but if you need them, email me.
Unplugged the Cat5 Cable, leaving only wireless, and plugged in a USB cable to the printer.

Done.

This seemed to complete fine, setting up a new printer 7520-2 alongside the one (7520) I'd done earlier. Unplugged the USB cable, and tried printing to the new printer - but all jobs were simply held instead of being processed.

More interestingly, the original (7520) printer which I set up earlier also refused to work (although it is still working on another PC I installed it on, so it's the drivers, and not the printer).
I plugged the Cat5 cable back in, as I'd done earlier, and started going through hp-setup -g using the second item, network printer. Unlike earlier, it couldn't find the printer, so it couldn't set it up.
So I opened the KDE printer setup, it found the IP address of the printer, and went through the install. That printer is working.
So there would seem to be something in hp-setup that is affecting connectivity to the printer, leaving the final install inoperable. The KDE printer setup avoids this, which is odd, since I'd be expecting it to be using the hplip backend.
Best wishes
Kevin

Hi Kevin Donnelly,
Thank for the logs, from logs looks like Printer can detect the device but fail to acquire the IP address.
Please let me know whether device is connected to Ethernet, while configuring the wireless setup?
I mean, while configuring the wireless setup, printer needs to disconnect from the Ethernet cable because printer acquires only one IP address either from wireless or from Ethernet cable.
If still not working, please to try "Method II" from http://
Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath
