HP Officejet 4500: "there are no scanner options"

Asked by sds

My problem seems similar to https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/197235
When I turn HP Officejet 4500 on, the printer display says "there are no scanner options", the simple scan times out trying to scan.
I tried to follow the instructions in the above question:
I have Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, hplip 3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1.
I removed the print queues from settings->printing; ran hp-setup; added the printer (USB-connected).
I selected "scan" in hp-toolbox and got simple scan which hang trying to connect to the scanner when I clicked the "scan" button.
I have 48kB in hp-check.log generated by `hp-check -t`, but I see no way to attach a file to this question.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting the issue in HPLIP. To help us understand and analyze the issue please follow following things.
=> Download and install the latest HPLIP release from
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html (automatic installer) or
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/index.html (manual installation, if automatic installer does not work)

=> run "hp-check --fix" command in the terminal if manual installation is done

=> Reconfigure print queue with the commands in the terminal mentioned below.
       => system-config-printer (remove all print queues)
      => su -c "hp-plugin"
             or
      => sudo hp-plugin (This will download right plugin)
       => hp-setup (It should not be run in a root mode. This command is adding print queue, make sure you select ppd name having "-ps" or "hpcups" substring)
=>Try printing/scanning now.

If problem does not get solved then please run following command to capture the logs and send the logs.

$su -c "hp-logcapture"

**Please use "Create a bug report" to attach the logs as "Ask a Question" does not provide the file attachment option
