Ubuntu 12.10 - HP Deskjet 3512 - Can't print

Asked by Robert Conely

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 and all was well using my HP j5700 printer. I bought a new printer HP Deskjet 3512 and was surprised to find it was not supported by this version of Ubuntu. I followed instructions at http://hplipopensource.com/ and downloaded hplip-3.12.10a. I installed the HP drivers and tray successfully (I choose Ubuntu 12.04 as my OS on the website but the installer recognized it as 12.10). Now I have no problems recognizing the printer is plugged in and is idle but when I print the document appears in the queue, the notification from the HP tray says its being printed, and after a few seconds it dissapears from the queue and the message succesfully printed pops up while the document does not print. I have tried .pdf, open office and terminal commands to print all with the same result. However, if the printer is in power save mode, the display panel does light up on the printer. I ran hp-check -t and got:

supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies

I know this may have resulted from my new and potentially unsupported Ubuntu distro, but I hoped there might be some fix other than returning to 12.04 (Which I installed on another computer and the printer works.) I welcome any help or suggestion. Thanks!

Hello Robert,

Ubuntu 12.10 is not yet supported in the auto installer of HPLIP (3.12.10a). The same will be supported in the next version of HPLIP. However in order to resolve the issue Please follow below steps.

1) sudo hp-uninstall

2)Follow manual installation instructions provided at:

    http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/ubuntu.html

3) Reconfigure print queue with the commands in the terminal mentioned below.
       => system-config-printer (remove all print queues)
      => sudo hp-plugin (This will download right plugin)
       => hp-setup (It should not be run in a root mode. This command is adding print queue, make sure you select ppd name having "-ps" or "hpcups" substring)
=>Try printing now.

For the HP 3512 i used HP 3520 eAll-in-One setting and it prints fine however xsane doesnt not detect a scanner built in but atleast it will print in Lubuntu 12.10

Hi Christopher Starks,

Please use HP deskjet 3510 settings, this is supported from HPLIP-3.12.9 version on-wards. If you are using old HPLIP version, please install latest version from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install.html

If still scan is not working, please provide following output.

$ hp-scan -g

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

I am following this issue closely, (basically having same problem, exact same printer) however I recieve a 404 not found with above link. Would you have an alternate link I could try?.
