It's okay. Lemme fix that really quick and look over this.

Hi,

OS is Linux; Debian package etch
Using HPLIP package, compiled and installed from source at sourceforge. Print and Fax from PC work, but when trying to run scan from the HP device manager following error msg reported

Failed to open device "hpaio:/usb/Officejet_4300_series?serial=CN79UH32Z604GQ"
Error during device I/O

/etc/sane.d/dll.conf contains entry for hpaio as well as the /etc/sane.d/ddl.d/hplip snippet.

Hmm, don't see a way to attach files so here is the hp-check log outputtutor:~# hp-check -t

Everything look okay, can you run:

su -c "tail -f /var/log/messages"

and then try and scan and post anything posted in the log.

Do we need Reportlab? Hmm, maybe a directory/path problem? The build and install was a "vanilla" process. did not change any of the options or defaults provided in the tar file.

No report lab is not needed for scanning, that's a fax add on and is not required regardless.

I think there is some sort of conflict, if possible lets try removing and re-installing hplip.

In the hplip source directory run:

su -c "make uninstall"

then

su -c "rm -rf /usr/share/hplip"

then

su -c "apt-get remove hplip"

then re-start the installer in the source directory:

./install.py

Hopefully this will resolve it.

Thanks, that did the trick...

The original problem was caused by "operator error" during the install process. Help was quick, courteous, and to the point.

Thanks again

Aaron, I was wondering if you could also help me. I've got the usual problem, my HP Laserjet M1522nf-MFP prints with no problems, but i get the "failed to open device `hpaio:/net/HP_Laserjet_M1522nf_MFP?ip=192.168.2.102': Error during device I/O." error. i ran hp-check, and got a lot of errors. here's the output, hope you can help.

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).
