Now Fixed - Unable to install latest version of HPLIP on openSuSE 12.2

Asked by Tom GOssler

I have corrected this issue, you can ignore the question! It appears that either during the upgrade process, or during the uninstall / reinstall of hplip / cups, cups service was shut down. Once I restarted the scheduler, the hplip install worked fine.

I just upgraded my desktop to openSuSE 12.2 from 11.3. hplip was upgraded during the process, and I was able to print to my printer, but hp-toolbox would not start. So, I uninstalled hplip via Yast, and reinstalled the version from the openSuSE site with the same results. I uninstalled again, and downloaded the most current version (3.12.10a) from the hplip website. When I attempt the install by running "sh hplip-3.12.10a.run" from a command line, I get the following:

Creating directory hplip-3.12.10a
Verifying archive integrity... All good.

Per "My Computer":

OS: Linux 3.4.6-2.10-desktop x86_64
System: openSUSE 12.2 (x86_64)
KDE: 4.8.5 (4.8.5) "release 2"

It appears the install did not get very far, as I cannot run hp-check to provide additional information. No files are found under /usr/share/hplip

This issue is fixed. Restarting the cups service allowed the hplip script to run successfully. Printing and scanning is working again, and the hp-toolbox runs correctly.

FYI,
regarding "...starting the cups service":
Since openSUSE 12.2cups not running is "normal"
since it is started on-demand in the default setup now,
