Photosmart D5160 prints test page after printing

Asked by neoex

I have a problem with hp photosmart d5160: whatever file i choose to print, after having printed that, my printer begins to print the self-test page. I have to stop it with the 'X' button on the printer.
This happen with hplip 2.7.10 (from repo) and 2.7.12 (manually installed).
I noticed that when it prints the test page, the memory card led is flashing. It doesn't matter is the memory card is plugged or not.
It seems a driver issue, because:
- if i'm printing from memory card, this doesn't happen
- with gutenprint this doesn't happen, but i have another problems and limitations

I'm using archlinux. Here's the output from hp-check -t:

It looks like hp doesn't detect the printer configured using the hpbackend

"warning: No queues found."

The test page that is printed is that a cups test page or hplip?

Also try running hp-setup to configure the printer, and you get the same result?

If so configure cups for debug mode, view the log and paste it here or at pastebin.

How to here: (issue 2)

Have a good day!

Before adding the printer i unplugged the usb as said on the website.
I tried to configure the printer using cups and also with hp-setup. The result is the same.

I think the test page is the own printer test page. It is composed by squares and lines. That's not the cups or hplip one.

http://pastebin.com/m573592d7
The test page printing began at about 18:34:20.

I know you said you tried it with cups, but just to be clear did you try using the USB backend or the HPLIP backend in cups? You should see the printer listed twice one for usb and for hplip. Try using the usb backend and see if you have the same problem.

This will let us narrow it down a little. Also I didn't see anything remarkable in your cups log.

I'm thinking right now that there is some garbage data that's being sent at the end of the job.

Does this happen with multi page documents? Are you using a usb hub? Possible to try a different cable and/or usb port?

I'm going to try and reproduce this however I wont be able to until tomorrow. Sorry for the delay.

I've just tried with both backends: still same problem.
This time i reinstalled hplip 2.7.10 from repositories, and i've rebooted pc before adding the printers in cups.

This happens also with multi page documents: the test(?) page is printed after the whole print job.
I'm not using a usb hub. The problem persists using a different usb port. I will try with another cable.

Thank you for your time.

If it's happening as well with the cups backend it tells us that it appears to not be an hplip problem, as it happens without hplip.

It does seem the printer is getting some extra data from someplace, possible to try the printer on a different system does it have the same result?

Yes, it happens also when not using hp backend, but the driver is still hplip... with gutenprint this doesn't happen (but it makes the printer 'crazy': it doesn't turn off well until i wait some minutes).

Now i'm going to try on this pc with ubuntu.
In the next days i will try on a friend's pc.

Same with ubuntu 7.04 + cups 1.2.8 + hpijs* 2.7.2 + hplip 1.7.3 (and a different cable on another usb port).

*I'm not so sure whether i got the difference: hpijs -> driver; hplip -> cups backend. That's right?
I'm thinking that on archlinux hpijs and hplip were merged into one package: hplip.

We haven't been able to reproduce this..it would seem with what we know right now that there may be a printer hardware problem going on.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

that sounds like a cartride test page...did you change pens recently? Have you always pressed cancel on this page?

@John Josszu: i didn't get what you mean with 'pen' (sorry, I'm not english), but I've solved with my retailer help: the color ink cartridge wasn't correctly recognized. Changing it solved the problem.
