Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp/usb/Officejet_G85

Asked by lizzy

Hi

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and today I installed hplip-3.12.9.run for trying to print.
What I can make up of the error codes is that the USB device of my printer HP Officejet G85 cannot be found.
Can you help me out?

After I followed the automatic installing instructions then I had to restart

I runned hp-setup
than hp-check-r
and hp-check --fix

(At the end it is saying that the printer not in use is but of course it is)

lizzy@lizzy-2:~$ hp-check --fix

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

Hi,

latest HPLIP packages uses libusb-1.0 version instead of libusb-0.1 version. Where as Officejet G85 is old printer, this doesn't support libusb-1.0.

Please make following changes:-
$ cd ~/Downloads/hplip-3.12.9 (assuming hplip-3.12.9.run file is downloaded in ~/Downloads folder, chagne accordingly).

$ ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-libusb01
$ make
$ sudo make install

$ hp-toolbox
--> Remove print queue using "-" symbols in toolbox
--> Power Off and Power On printer
--> Add print queue using "+" symbols in toolbox

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Dear Amarnath

Thanks it is working, first it was not but I changed the command
$ ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-libusb01_build

Also I skipped the $ hp-toolbox
--> Remove print queue using "-" symbols in toolbox
--> Power Off and Power On printer
--> Add print queue using "+" symbols in toolbox

And now it is working, great!

Have a nice weekend

Regards

Lizzy

Dear Lizzy,

sorry for the typo, --enable-libusb01_build was correct.
