Unable to scan via network m175nw

Asked by Thomas Speier

I just bought an HP LaserJet Pro 100 MFP M175nw AIO printer. I am trying to get the printer connected to my computer running Linux Mint 13. I download HPLIP version 3.12.6 from the HP linux website, and the printer is found and works great. However, when I try to scan using xsane, I get a message saying "No devices available". I got around this using the troubleshooting page http://hplipopensource.com/node/212.

When I provide the URI from hp-makeuri as an argument to xsane, I get the following error: "Failed to open device `hpaio:/net/HP_LaserJet_100_colorMFP_M175nw?ip=192.168.1.204': Invalid argument." Can you please help me resolve this so that I can scan across the network to my Linux computer?

Thank you.

Hi Thomas Speier,

Please check whether "192.168.1.204" IP address is accessible.
$ ping 192.168.1.204

if ping command is fine, just run xsane command.
$ xsane

If you are facing any problem, please post us "hp-check " output here.

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

The network connectivity to the printer is fine because I can print to the printer, I just cannot scan.

xsane returns the following error: "Failed to open device `hpaio:/net/HP_LaserJet_100_colorMFP_M175nw?ip=192.168.1.204': Invalid argument."

I will post the hp-check output when I get home tonight.

Hi Thomas Speier,

Can you please make following changes and try scan, other functionality.

$ su
$ su -
=> take a backup "/usr/share/hplip/data/model/model.dat" (just for safe side)
$ cp /usr/share/hplip/data/model/model.dat /usr/share/hplip/data/model/model.dat_orginal

$ gedit /usr/share/hplip/data/model/model.dat
--> search for "[hp_laserjet_100_colormfp_m175nw]" string.
--> few lines below, find "io-mfp-mode=3".
--> replace to "io-mfp-mode=1" from "io-mfp-mode=3"
--> restart printer and PC.

--> Now try scan.
$ xsane

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

I am having a very similar issue and will be watching this thread. Thanks.

I switched over to Debian 6.0.4 last night and the scanner now works. I do not know what the issue was with Linux Mint 13.

I gave up expecting a solution to this issue. I understand that some issues could be to obscure to concern a developer. There time is wisely spent elsewhere. About three weeks ago (beginning of September, 2012) I installed Ubuntu 12.04LTS over the Linux Mint 13 install. I have other Ubuntu machines that scan with our Officejet 6310 just fine. The new install of Ubuntu scans just fine on the same hardware that LM13 was running on. So, that suggests to me that in my case it was not hardware related but rather software related, hence LM13 was to blame. Sorry, LM13. I could never be 100% sure, though. Bottom line, Ubuntu worked out of the box.
