hplip refuses to acknowledge printer on usb

Asked by Will Jagy

I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 yesterday. I have a printer, HP LaserJet P1606dn that has been working fine for a year. The printer stopped working. Last night i downloaded driver 3.12.6. I eventually managed to provide the missing plugin it had been complaining about. But now it just will not communicate with the printer. Jobs i send to the printer do not actually get printed, although they get added to a printer queue, which i then can clean out by clicking on the hp icon and choosing something or other.

Note that the sh hplip-3.12.6.run command seemed to do quite well, in directory Downloads.

Note that I am not competent to fix this the way the guy reporting the bug did.

Today is Friday. I got home and just turned off the computer, turned off the power to it, unplugged the printer, and thought about things. After a while, I turned the power on for the computer, turned it on, logged in. I tried lsusb, nothing. Then I plugged in the printer, tried lsusb, still nothing. Then i pushed the on button for the printer, then lsusb said there was something HP at a usb. For no good reason, I tried lpq, and it gave these!!!!!!!!!!!

Then I said lpr filename.txt and it actually printed the file. After that i went wild and asked it to print from an application. Which it did. I then attempted hp-setup because I thought i was supposed to do that, I do not think that worked, but as long as I can print crap and scan other crap I am in acceptable shape.

Duplicate of Bug #1094320 .

With need to 'remove' Smart Install, as discussed in Question #197678.

Should be resolved (?) by updating to latest HPLIP (3.13.3).
