[Smart-connect] hp-setup can't find m1132 MFP on USB (ubuntu 11.10)

Asked by Roux

Hi,

I just bought a HP LaserJet Professional m1132 MFP and can't make it work on my Ubuntu 11.10 machine.

If I just plug it, the printer gets found and installed automatically into System/Config/Printers but when I try and print a testpage, it fails laternatively with either "/usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups failed" or "/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed".

So I tried to run hp-setup (both with sudo or not) and, weirdly since my machine obviously see the printer, hp-setup cannot find it and fails with "error: No devices found on bus: usb", sometimes popping up a (Device Communication error 5012)

hp-toolbox also pops out this error message "error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_Professional_M1132_MFP?serial=000000000QH60LXPSI1c"

Below is the output of hp-setup -tb.

Thanks a lot in advance!

After more investigating, it looks like I'm experiencing the "smart-connect" hazard : my printer is recognized as a cd-rom and therefore can't discuss with hplip https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usb-modeswitch/+bug/813482
It doesn not looklike this issue has been solved yet except by first removing slartconnect from the printer within windows and I do not have any windows machine. Any news on the matter ?

Below mys syslog and dmesg indicating the cdrom recognition on usb replug:

Hi Roux,

Please wait for few days as the support for disabling the smart install from Linux will probably be available in the next release scheduled in a months time or so. We will surely let you know if we can provide a patch in the meantime. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks,
Sanjay
