unable to read Dot4ReverseReply with fc8/2.7.7 and LaserJet 2500
I'm getting what I've seen in google as an old problem, but one that was fixed. I upgraded from fedora core 6 (hplip 1.7.4.a) to fedora core 8 (hplip 2.7.7) and got the following errors:
Dec 17 20:26:02 tendo hp_color_
c 254: unable to read Dot4ReverseReply data: Resource temporarily unavailable exp=3 act=0
Dec 17 20:26:02 tendo hp_color_
Dec 17 20:26:02 tendo hp_color_
Dec 17 20:27:17 tendo hp_color_
Dec 17 20:27:17 tendo hp_color_
Dec 17 20:27:17 tendo hp_color_
I messed with things a bit, looked at hp-toolbox (couldn't get status from printer). Tried hp-setup again... hp-check complains about a missing python installer/dcheck module. Created new instances of the printer.. restarted services... Nothing worked.
So I "forced" rpm to "upgrade" back to the fc6 version, along with hpijs and net-snmp-libs. It started working again immediately.
I believe the USB device I am using is this one:
crw-rw-r-- 1 root lp 189, 132 2007-12-17 21:46 /dev/bus/
Any ideas? Is this a known problem?

Is it possible to install the latest release of hplip and retest? There have been a lot of changes since 2.7.7. If you continue to have problems run hp-check and post the output please.

I'd rather stay with the RPM for maintainability, but I'll check rpmforge to see if they have a later version.
Any hints as to why hp-check didn't work for me? I couldn't figure out which python module was missing. It was the import line where it tries to import dcheck from installer.

Can you post the error you get when you run hp-check?

Not without unfixing what I already fixed, so I'm reluctant to. It was a missing python module. Something like could not import from installer -- the line in the python code was something like 'from installer import dcheck'.
If I reinstall the 2.7.7 RPM's I'll run it again. otherwise, I think I'll wait until Fedora updates their FC8 hplip RPMs.

Okay sorry I couldn't help more. It's hard to test the rpm's because we don't create them, and can't say for sure how/if they where modified.
If you need anything else feel free to post again.

It's been a while and fedora has released 2.8.2 of hplip,so I upgraded, removed and readded printers, and I still get the error.
Actually, I'll state first I got this error:
Jul 4 09:40:40 tendo hp_color_
Jul 4 09:40:40 tendo hp_color_
Found some references on the web about removing and re-adding the entries, restarting hpssd, and cups, and that seemed to fix that. So, onto the next error:
Jul 4 10:31:09 tendo hp_color_
Jul 4 10:31:09 tendo hp_color_
Jul 4 10:32:24 tendo hp_color_
Jul 4 10:32:24 tendo hp_color_
Jul 4 10:32:24 tendo hp_color_
Jul 4 10:33:38 tendo hp_color_
Jul 4 10:33:39 tendo hp_color_
Jul 4 10:33:39 tendo hp_color_
Jul 4 10:34:54 tendo hp_color_
Jul 4 10:34:54 tendo hp_color_
Jul 4 10:34:54 tendo hp_color_
I don't know what the unknown printer is below, I assume it is some USB serial device I have (I have several), so we can ignore it.

dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
