HP Photosmart 2575 fails on multiple scans on Oneiric

Asked by Tom Brazier

I have recently installed Oneiric and my scanner is no longer able to scan multiple pages, which was fine under Maverick.

To replicate: open xsane and set number of pages > 1. At the end of the second scan, the scanner freezes and an error is eventually returned and scanning stops.

I've done all the usual restarting the PC and the printer/scanner as well as reinstalling hplip.

hp-check -r give the following:

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.11.7)

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper
dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has
the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Hi Tom,

Can you please try the same with latest HPLIP 3.12.4 release. Please follow the below instrucitons.

1. Delete the existing print queue using "system-config-printer" from the terminal.
2. Download and install the latest HPLIP from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html. Installation instructions can also be found in the same page.
3. Re-configure the queue using "hp-setup" from the terminal.

Let us know if the problem still persists. Thanks for using HPLIP.

Thanks and Regards,
Srikanth Lokare

Please note that:

For xsane, scan will work fine when source is ADF and number of pages >= 1.

If source is Flatbed/Platen, then number of pages must be 1 only.

In answer to Sarbeswar Meher: xsane does not offer ADF as a source, only "Flatbed". This used to work fine under Maverick Meerkat. I do not have an ADF, but can easily feed the pages manually during the carriage return.

For info, Maverick has xsane 0.998 (same as Oneiric) and hplib 3.11.1.

Revision history for this message
Tom Brazier (tom-launchpad) said :

I have now tried 3.11.1 on Oneiric and the problem remains (even though this version worked on Maverick).

I suspect the issue is a race condition triggered by some difference in the libraries in Oneiric. If I suspend the xsane process before the carriage reaches the end of the page and then restart it once the end is reached, scanning will continue indefinitely.

Tom Brazier (tom-launchpad) said :

I have now found the difference between Maverick and Oneiric. In my Maverick install, the backend compression mode in xsane's config is 'None' whereas I have 'JPEG' in Oneiric. Using scanimage, as below, I have now confirmed that the behaviour in Maverick and Oneiric is identical:

JPEG has the error:

$ scanimage -d hpaio:/net/Photosmart_2570_series?zc=printer -b --batch-count=3 --compression JPEG
Scanning 3 pages, incrementing by 1, numbering from 1
Scanning page 1
Scanned page 1. (scanner status = 5)
Scanning page 2
Scanned page 2. (scanner status = 5)
Scanning page 3
scanimage: sane_start: Error during device I/O

None works fine:

$ scanimage -d hpaio:/net/Photosmart_2570_series?zc=printer -b --batch-count=3 --compression None
Scanning 3 pages, incrementing by 1, numbering from 1
Scanning page 1
Scanned page 1. (scanner status = 5)
Scanning page 2
Scanned page 2. (scanner status = 5)
Scanning page 3
Scanned page 3. (scanner status = 5)
