HPLIP fails to install HP LaserJet P1606dn on Ubuntu

Asked by Corrado

Hi.

Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit
HP LaserJet P1606dn

Each time I plug in the printer, Hplip says a proprietary plugin is missing, but the installation of that plugin fails. After this, the driver is no longer detected as an attached USB device:

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully
compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to
successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Run in terminal : $ lsusb

It will display on device as Hewlett-Packard.

e.g. Bus 001 Device 002: ID 03f0:002a Hewlett-Packard

Run in teminal : $ lsusb -d 03f0:002a -v

If bMumInterfaces = 1, then smart install has been enabled.

Smart install disable feature is not yet supported in hplip release. You need to install the windows driver. Go to the folder when driver has been installed. Go inside UTIL folder. You need to run "SIUtility.exe" to disable the smart install. Once smart install has been disabled, connect the device to linux machine.

Now you can setup using 'hp-setup'.

The smart install disable feature will be supported in the next release hplip-3.12.6.

I too have an HP Laserjet p1606dn. I was running Lubuntu 12.04 and had this same problem. I've just upgraded to 12.10, and now my HPLIP has been upgraded to 3.12.6.

I'm trying to set up printing to the p1606dn, connected over the LAN (not USB). I know the printer's IP address. (Note: I also have a Windows 7, and an OSX computer, and both of those were easy to set up to print over the network. So I know it's possible, and my LAN is not somehow misconfigured)

But I still can't successfully set up the printer in Lubuntu 12.10. When I proceed using HP Device Manager Plugin Installer Driver Plugin Installation, once I agree to the licensing terms, the same cryptic error message appears: "Plug-in install failed."

Do I still need to run "SIUtility.exe" from a Windows box first? And once I do so, will driver installation for printing over the LAN work?

When you say "Go to the folder when driver has been installed" to find "SIUtility.exe", where would that likely be?

I installed the Windows XP (32bit) driver from "LJP1100_P1560_P1600_Full_Solution.exe". After successful installation, I can't find "SIUtility.exe" anywhere on the "C:" drive.

Can anyone provide a direct link to download "SIUtility.exe"from anywhere within the hp.com domain?

I don't think it's quite time to close this case yet! ;)

Any help would be most appreciated.
