Please run 'hp-setup' in terminal for the printer LJ1212nf. It will ask for a plugin file to install. Please do so. If you have still any issue, please post the output of 'hp-check'

ingo (rum-topf) said : #2

Thank you very much for your reply. I did run hp-setup -i previously and it exited with the error message

"error: Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again."

The cups error message is the same every time I run hp-setup. Here again the output of hp-check:

toad@deskarch 1000\1 ~ > hp-check

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the
proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP
supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time
dependencies).

Can you please check whether cups installed correctly.

1) check whether "http:/localhost:631/admin" URI is accessible from browser.
If not accessible, please uninstall and re-install CUPS.

2) also provide "lpstat -r" and "lpstat -v" commands output.

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I can access the cups interface no probs - I can even setup the printer from there but it obviously will not install the proprietary plugin :(

toad@deskarch 933\38 /run/cups > lpstat -r
scheduler is running

toad@deskarch 933\39 /run/cups > lpstat -v
device for PSC-1500-series: hp:/usb/PSC_1500_series?serial=MY564B10GS0498
device for PSC_1500: hp:/usb/PSC_1500_series?serial=MY564B10GS0498

From the hp-setup log, failing during cups adding request. BTW, which distro you are using..

Please install printers using CUPS URI and install the plugin's using hp-plugin command
$ sudo hp-plugin

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

ingo (rum-topf) said : #8

ArchLinux, fully up-to-date.

Did as you requested, CUPS finds and installs printer. I then call up hp-plugin and it appears to install the plugin successfully but CUPS keeps on saying "HP LaserJet Professional m1212nf MFP hpijs, 3.12.4, requires proprietary plugin".

Tried restarting CUPS but no joy.

I think, "HP LaserJet Professional m1212nf MFP hpijs, 3.12.4, requires proprietary plugin" message is displayed in "http:localhost:631/printers/" URI. If so, this general statement but cups won't validate and display "requires proprietary plugin" message.
Now you can start using printer..:-)

If print is failing, please send "hp-check" output.

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Hi,

printing fails and hp-check complains that the printer was not hplip installed:

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the
proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Okay, problem solved and it was all my mistake. The network printer's ip address had changed and I failed to edit /etc/cups/client.conf to reflect that change.

Now everything is fine. Many thanks for your help and I am sorry to have put you through so much unnecessary bother. Still, perhaps the above info may be of use in future queries.
