Unable to install HP Laserjet wireless Printer properly

Asked by danOMD

I just bought a HP Laserjet P1102w wireless-enabled printer an unfortunately I haven't been capable of using it wirelessly and even on USB doesn't always work.

I run Ubuntu 10.02 recetly upgraded to 12.02 and the issue persists.

Basically the printer only works via USB and only after resetting it and I have to do this every time I use the printer after it has gone to sleep mode or I had restarted my computer.

The wireless connection has never worked, I try to set it up with the HP-Config wizard connected to USB when the printer is being recognised but I get the following error:

An I/O error occurred.
Please check the USB connection to your printer and try again.
(Device I/O error)

I have noticed the printer doesn't have an IP address attached to it since the IP address on the printer self-test page comes up as 0.0.0.

I tried installing HP-lips trough different methods (Ubuntu Software Center, Donwloading and unpacking and using the installation wizard) I have reinstalled and installed at least four times an get the same results everytime, have red several posts around and haven't found anyone with a similar problem as it seems that for most people the printer either work or doesn't.

Quite stuck right now, if anyone could help me to find the path to solve this I will be deeply grateful.

Best,

Daniel

Hi ,

Can you try the following work around to configure through Wifi.

1.Download the Windows full solution driver for this device and then Double click on the exe to extract and install.
2. Select "Configure the device through Wifi first..." and continue.
3. Select "Advanced" option to select the wireless network manually.
4. Finally print a test page. An IP address will be printed.
5. Now try to configure the device in Linux using IP address as follows.
      hp-setup <IP address>
     e.g hp-setup 192.168.3.6

Hi Sanjay,

Many thanks for your help with this, I have tried to assign a fixed IP address using your suggested method and it worked, I did it running a Windows XP on a Virtual Machine and installing the full original package downloaded from the HP website.

I have an IP address now which is great. The blue wireless indicator on my printer doesn't blink all the time and stays on which I suppose means the printer is ready.

HP Setup recognises the printer but I still can't print, I get a "Service Request 1806 Please correct the problem and try again" error message permanently therefore the printer is unable to take any jobs.

I tried installing everything from scratch but this doesn't go as easy.

DO you know what can be good to do now?

Thanks

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

May be, Smart Install feature is enabled in your device. If this is enabled, your device will be detected as CDRom from where you can install the software on windows. Unfortunately we don't support this feature in Linux as of now. If you disable this feature on device, your device will be detected in Linux. To disable this you should have a windows machine and can follow the below steps.

1. Download the Full Driver for Windows from www.hp.com or http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=4075452&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us
2. Run the exe, extract it to a folder.
3. Go to extracted folder/UTIL directory
4. Connect your device.
5. Run SIUtility.exe and follow the wizard to disable the feature.

After disabling this feature both USB and Wifi should work. Please follow steps from comment#1 after disabling smart install.

Hi Sanjay,

This worked! I can't thank you enough for helping me solve this ongoing issue.

I deactivatde Smart Install using Windows XP on a Virtual Machine within my Ubuntu Netbook went back to Ubuntu and tried the printer again but didn't work at first, so decided to uninstall HPLIPS and do a fresh installation and reboot. After that and setting up the printer as a network device via IP address worked flawlessly without the need of a USB cable.

Once again, thanks for your help.

Daniel
