Print photo using full 4x6 card on a PhotoSmart 475

Asked by James FitzRandolph

I just upgraded to Slackware 12.0, hplip 1.7.4a, cups 1.2.11. I originally defined the printer just in CUPS, but could not print using the full 4x6 photo card. I then redefined the printer in hplip (hplip/toolbox), and let it set the printer up. It still insists on printing my photos with a small white border around the image.

Inside CUPS, the printer is defined as 'HP PhotoSmart 470 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)', with a page size of 'Photo or 4x6 card', printout mode as 'Photo (on photo paper)', and resolution as '1200 dpi, Photo, full bleed, ...' (but I have tried other settings here).

Inside the toolbox I have the page size set to 'Photo or 4x6 inch index card', quality is defined as '1200 dpi, Photo, Full Bleed, ...' (again, I have tried other settings here too), fit to page is selected, scaling (relative to page) is 100%.

I have tried several different things to get this to work. GIMP (forcing the image to 4x6, no margins, 100% scaling), raw postscript using lp and lpr, lpr using the original jpg file, ... Nothing gives me full size.

What am I missing? Any hints appreciated.

Have you looked over this document?

Hopefully it will resolve your questions. If not please let me know. :)

Yes, I have looked at that document. But, just in case, I did it twice more, both times following the instructions in the 'Fullbleed Printing Method Number 2: Using lpr' section. I read the steps one at a time, and verified my work as I did it just to be sure. In both cases, the image printed with one edge of the picture against the edge of the paper, approximate 1/8" top and bottom, and 1/4" on the left (leading) edge.

One thing I noticed that was not in the instructions was to clear the X/Y offset values on the 'Save as Postscript' panel (both showed as 0.20 inches). This resulted in the postscript file containing a '%%BoundingBox: 14 14 447 303' line. However, I reran the test, setting both of these to zero, got a '%%BoundingBox: 0 0 432 288' line, and identical output on the printer.

Would you be able to send me the image you are trying to print, and a scanned image of the output you are getting? I'll see if I can reproduce.

I believe I have found the problem. It looks like the HP470 series PPD
file does not correctly support the 475. I have made some changes to it,
and will attach the revised version. The one parameter I am unsure of is
the 'ParamCustomPageSize', not being positive what the 100000 values were.

Thanks for the help,
Jim

The one parameter I am unsure of is the 'ParamCustomPageSize', not being positive what the 100000 values were. If these 0's should be 100000's, please let me know. Otherwise, you can consider this problem solved.

James,

I tested this on a Photosmart 475 and I haven't been able to reproduce.

Check to make sure you have 1200dpi fullbleed.

Run: hp-toolbox
Click Print Settings
Change Quality to 1200dpi fullbleed

Also open the file in GIMP
Print Size
Make sure the size is correct for 4x6

Open the file using with image viewer or your default imaging viewing app.

and print and it should (in theory) print correctly.

This is what I did and it worked for me.

Hope this helps!

Aaron

Hi, I've got Photosmart C5280 and I have allmost this same problem. I found that fullbleed option is needed but not adequate. I mean PPD's borders. For me, 4x6 index have:
*ImageableArea Photo/Photo or 4x6 inch index card: "0 36 288 432" so it should have lower border (with scaling it means, the left border also appears but using paper:
*ImageableArea PhotoTearOff/Photo with tear-off tab: "0 0 288 432" makes printout borderless.
It's logic but... shouldn't fullbleed option makes that change by default?

Can you help with this problem?
