Cannot manually install hplip 3.12 on openSuse 12.1

Asked by bart

When I follow the online instructions, I receive the following errors:
First... Step 2, Item C. When I run the command as shown, I get an error that says Too few Arguments. Can I assume that I should have included a file name, that would have been provided if the previous command (zypper update) had found a problem?

Next... When I run the ./configure command. the process stops with an error message that states it cannot find libusb support. Looking in the distros.dat file, it says that suse 12.1 is the same as suse 11.4. In the 11.4 section, it calls for two libusb files: libusb-1_0-devel and libusb-1_0-0. Both of these files are reported as installed by yast. I used yast to force a refresh and the error messages continue.

I'm in way over my head! I don't know where to look to correct this situation. Help!

Out of curiosity:
Why do you need to "manually install hplip 3.12 on openSuse 12.1"?
In other words:
What is the issue with hplip-3.11.10 what we provide out-of-the-box
in openSUSE 12.1?

I simply cannot get version 3.11 to set up my printer, a HP Photosmart Premium C309g, in wireless mode. It does work well with a USB connection, but it will not finish the wireless installation.

I remember a few releases of Suse (before it was open Suse) where I had troubles with HP printers and manually installed a new version of um... something and my problems went away.

I need to get my printer working. But, I would also like to understand why I'm having trouble with the manual install of the newer hplip software. Two issues? Perhaps. I'm hoping the second will fix the first.

I am afraid I cannot help regarding setup in wireless mode.
For such issues the HPLIP team could provide information.

FYI:

The current HPLIP 3.12.2 release as ready-made RPMs for
various openSUSE and Suse Linux Enterprise versions is available
via the "Printing" development project in the openSUSE build service
for 32-bit i586 and 64-bit x86_64 architecture.

E.g. for openSUSE 12.1 from this direct URL
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/openSUSE_12.1/
as packages "hplip", "hplip-hpijs", and "hplip-sane".

Carefully read
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:How_to_set-up_a_HP_printer
and
https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=Printing

The issue related to libusb will be fixed in next hplip-3.12.6 release where only libusb-1.0 support is there.

Can you help with this problem?
