printed output missing formatting

Asked by benzene

Ubuntu 7.04
Kernel 2.6.20-16-generic
hplip version 1.3, 2004/05/05 21:57:20
Printer: HP Officejet 7410 All-In-One
driver: hpjis
Wired Ethernet IP address
Cups test page prints fine from this Ubuntu machine
Printer prints fine from Windows XP machines on local net

Problem: Output printed from this Ubuntu machine is missing its formatting. The text comes out, but it is all left-justified, single (or less) spaced, no fonts. It doesn't matter whether I print from OpenOffice 2.2, Adobe Acrobat 7.0.9, a simple text file, or whatever. The text is all run together.

What could cause this?
Where do I look?

Thanks.

Please uninstall the pre-installed hplip.

sudo apt-get remove hplip

and install the latest version of hplip from the hplip website. http://hplip.sf.net

This was a problem in a release awhile ago however it has been fixed. If this doesn't solve your concern please run:

hp-check -t

and post the output.

Installing the latest hplip should in theory resolve this.

Printing works fine now from the Ubuntu system. Great answer!

FYI, one prompt on the hplip installation screen confused me a bit. I tried the Automatic mode first. It seemed to run fine, but ended with a choice to either "reboot, unplug/replug the USB, or quit." Since my 7410 is on my local net, none of the options seemed right. So I quit and started again in Custom mode. I made mostly default choices, noting that I have a Network/JetDirect printer. Again I hit the choice to reboot, unplug/replug, or quit. This time I rebooted (something I'm not used to doing in linux). When the system came back up, the printer was working fine.

I suggest a slight re-wording of the "reboot, unplug..." prompt to help those who, like me, don't immediately see a fit between the prompt and a networked printer. Something like "if USB, unplug/replug, if not USB, reboot to finish install, or quit to abandon install." I'm sure you can find better words.

Good idea! Thanks for that. I'll see what I can do with it. Thanks for your feedback and support of hplip!
