hp 6mp with cups, on suse 12.1 "printout disabled" always

Asked by jim bennett

6mp on lpt, suse 12.1, efforts to set up printer using either yast or hplip,
fail to enable printer. Upon reboot, printer will do test page, but that's all.
/dev/parport0 permissions ok, group memberships ok
hp device manager says "could not connect to cups server"

killing and restarting cups server yields

Hi,

Please run command "hp-check -t" in terminal and provide its terminal output here.

Optionally you can try to download latest hplip-3.12.2 from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html. Download the hplip-3.12.2.run file and install it by running command "sh hplip-3.12.2.run"

After the installation is finished go to hplip-3.12.2 folder

cd hplip-3.12.2

run in terminal ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-pp-build ( => this is to enable parallel port setup of the printer)

run make (=> to compile the code)
run sudo make install (=> to install the hplip package)

Run command "hp-setup" in terminal to configure/setup your printer.

Regards,
Goutam

Forget my comment.
You wrote "Upon reboot, printer will do test page"
which proves that the printer is accessible via the parallel port
and that it basically works to send data to it.

   Forget my comment.
You wrote "Upon reboot, printer will do test page"
which proves that the printer is accessible via the parallel port
and that it basically works to send data to it.

Yesterday, before my first email, I checked with lsmod and found
   parport 46528 3 lp,parport_pc,ppdev

However, despite your disclaimer, I read your reference and did another lsmod:
  no lp module was present.
Hmm. Something must have killed it, most likely during my efforts to set up printer.
However, after
   modprobe lp
with the relevant modules now loaded, I used YaST (not hplip) with result that printer is found but "printing disabled"
and there was no way to enable it. So I deleted the printer.
Next, using hplip I tried to set up the printer, but "no hp devices found."

Methinks there is more than one problem here.

Oops, I see I'm running 3.11.10 which was distributed with 12.1. But when I try to compile 3.12.2,
linux-pkvp Downloads/hplip-3.12.2# locate libjpeg
/usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62
/usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62.0.0
/usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0/jre/lib/amd64/libjpeg.so
/usr/lib64/libjpeg.so.62
/usr/lib64/libjpeg.so.62.0.0
/usr/lib64/libjpeg.so.8
/usr/lib64/libjpeg.so.8.0.2

the make for hplip doesn't like the SuSE version of libjpeg.

I'm going to have to work on getting 3.12.2 compiled before bothering you guys more.

Bludgeoned compilation of hplip 3.12.2 to enable parallel printer.
Now hplip setup says "no devices found".
Yast, on the other hand, sees the printer but can't print a test page.
Now back to hp-check -t, which looks pretty clean:

FYI,
regarding comment #5 where you wrote:

"YaST ... printer is found but "printing disabled
and there was no way to enable it. So I deleted the printer."

You can re-enable it in the YaST printer"Modify"dialog,
for general information see
http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Printer

For general information regarding "printing disabled" see
"What is a CUPS backend and how does it work?" at
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell

But when you debug such kind of printing issues,
I even recommend to delete the whole print queue
and re-create it from scratch for each new test
to be safe that not whatever issue which is related
to the old print queue setup is left.

But when the root cause is a lower-level issue
(e.g. a lower level issue regarding communication
via the parallel port) then it usually would not help
to only re-create the print queue from scratch.
Instead the root cause must be fixed at the lower level.

In your case first and foremost make sure that the test via
  echo -en "\rHello\r\f" >/dev/lp0
as described in
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Installing_a_Printer
works.

Thanks for the suggestions.
When I said, There was no way to enable..." I should have said that checking the "enable printer" button in Yast had no effect.

I have read the docs that you suggest. echo -en "\rHello\r\f" >/dev/lp0 produces no output and no error messages.
485 % lpq
parallelprinter is ready
no entries

I now have two printers configured via Yast: the usb printer works fine; the parallel not at all. Here's the description of each from Yast:
Local parallelprinter HP LaserJet 6MP with driver HP LaserJet 6MP hpijs pcl3,3.11.10 Yes Ready
Local Stylus-Photo-780 linux-pkvp Ready

Crucially, there is no "location" for the parallelprinter.

Having gotten this far, hplip can't find any printers: setup says no devices found (for parallel ports)

hp-check now yields:

Strangely, the hplip button on the toolbar identifies the parallel printer as "HP LaserJet 6MP (/dev/parport0)
parport0 and lp0 are different devices -- one is not a link to the other. Should it be?

Mirabile dictu! Reboot, no other changes, and parallel printer seems to work. At least it does test page, lpr, and printing from browser.

Oddly, the hplip icon is missing from the kde toolbar. And hp-check still returns warnings about printers not installed using hplip. I can live with that.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have no idea why it functions now. But you can bet that I'll save the setup params.

I was able to get hp-setup to work by doing this: "LC_ALL=C hp-setup". Now the scanner works. The log message that shows the problem is "Unsupported character set "iso-8859-1" in /var/log/cups/error.log.

It seems the "Unsupported character set iso-8859-1 in /var/log/cups/error.log"
is still the very old bug that HPLIP does not work in compliance with IPP/CUPS
regarding the character set that is used in HPLIP's IPP communication, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/162196
in particular
